Buxar’s New Ganga Bridge Set to Transform Travel and Boost Economic Growth in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

Published on

The construction of the third Ganga bridge in Buxar is progressing rapidly, bringing a new wave of optimism for improved connectivity between Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. This ambitious infrastructure project is expected to revolutionize travel, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance economic growth across the region. On Monday, Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary conducted an aerial inspection of the ongoing bridge construction. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the work completed so far and urged officials to expedite the remaining tasks to ensure the timely completion of the project.

Key Benefits of the New Ganga Bridge for Travel and Trade

The new Ganga bridge in Buxar is being constructed to directly connect the Buxar–Patna Highway (NH-922) with the Purvanchal Expressway. This direct link is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, especially improving access to cities like Varanasi and Lucknow. This bridge will serve as a crucial route to bypass the heavy traffic on the two existing Ganga bridges, which are frequently congested and often result in long queues. By providing an alternative route, the new bridge will ease the burden on the existing infrastructure, offering smoother and faster travel for both locals and commuters.

The new bridge is also expected to benefit local businesses in Buxar. Many residents and shopkeepers have raised concerns about the increasing traffic on market roads, which has caused frequent disruptions. The construction of the bridge is seen as a solution to these problems, with hopes that it will help alleviate congestion in the local market areas.

Impact on Economic Development in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Northern Bihar

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, during his inspection visit, also took the opportunity to review industrial units in the Nawanagar Industrial Area, including Varun Beverages, Bharat Plus Ethanol, and SLMG Beverages. He highlighted how the new bridge will contribute to economic growth by facilitating quicker transportation of goods along the Delhi–Varanasi–Patna corridor. The efficient movement of goods will not only help local industries but will also have a positive impact on trade and commerce in the surrounding areas.

Residents, such as Santosh Kumar Thakur, are optimistic that this project will foster development in eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Bihar. They believe that the bridge will bring new employment opportunities and stimulate business activities, making the region more economically vibrant. By improving connectivity, the bridge is expected to open doors for new industries and services, which will benefit the local population.

Details of the Bridge’s Construction and Design

The new Ganga bridge in Buxar is being constructed as a three-lane structure that will span a length of 3.2 kilometers. It will be supported by 40 strong pillars, including eight pillars placed in the main stream of the Ganga River and 32 pillars on both banks. To ensure the stability of the bridge, deep drilling up to 170 feet has been completed for soil testing. The main construction work began after the necessary central geotechnical clearance was obtained.

In addition to the bridge, a two-kilometer elevated road and a rotary will be constructed to link the main bridge to nearby highways, including the Ballia–Ghazipur Greenfield Highway. The construction of a nearly completed four-lane spur will further enhance the accessibility of the area. The infrastructure is designed to provide seamless connectivity for both local and long-distance commuters, significantly improving the region’s road network.

Challenges and Delays in the Bridge Project

The bridge project was first announced in the 2024 Union Budget, but it faced several delays. Initially, the detailed project report and tender process were canceled twice due to technical issues. Despite these setbacks, the third attempt to finalize the project was successful, and the work order was officially issued on January 9, 2025. The project is now progressing at a steady pace, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) overseeing the work under the hybrid annuity model.

The estimated cost of the new Ganga bridge is around Rs 368 crore, and the project is expected to be completed within 910 days. Once completed, the bridge will play a vital role in reshaping the transportation infrastructure of the region, leading to long-term economic growth and better connectivity. The bridge’s construction is a key element in addressing the growing transportation demands of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, offering a much-needed upgrade to the region’s infrastructure.

Looking Forward to a Transformed Connectivity Landscape

The new Ganga bridge in Buxar is a transformative project for the region. It promises to reduce travel time, alleviate traffic congestion, and support the economic development of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. By providing a crucial link between key highways and expressways, the bridge will improve transportation efficiency and boost trade and commerce across both states. The new infrastructure is expected to attract investment, create jobs, and support the growth of industries in the region.

This bridge project also highlights the importance of modern infrastructure in fostering regional development. As the bridge nears completion, local communities, businesses, and industries are likely to experience the positive impact of enhanced connectivity, which will contribute to their long-term prosperity. The Buxar Ganga bridge is set to become a vital part of the transportation network in eastern India, paving the way for a more connected, economically dynamic future.
