Cold Conditions Intensify in Bihar, With More Than 10 Cities Affected by Fog

Published on

As December settles in, Bihar is experiencing a steady decline in temperatures, with cold conditions worsening across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), westerly winds blowing at speeds of 12–15 kmph are expected on December 5 and 6, which will further reduce night-time temperatures. The drop in temperatures will be particularly noticeable in parts of northern and southwestern Bihar, with some regions seeing minimum temperatures 2–4 degrees Celsius lower than normal.

Intensifying Cold Conditions Across Bihar

Over the past 24 hours, more than 10 cities, including Patna, Begusarai, Kishanganj, Bettiah, Bagaha, and Gopalganj, have been enveloped in a thick layer of fog. Bhagalpur recorded the lowest temperature, with a minimum of 9.9°C, making it the coldest district in the state on Wednesday. In several areas, early morning temperatures remained around the 10°C mark, signaling the severity of the cold wave.

Currently, the minimum temperature across Bihar ranges between 9.9°C and 17°C. Northwestern districts like Sitamarhi, West Champaran, Shivhar, and Darbhanga have reported temperatures close to 10°C, while places such as Gaya, Kaimur, Rohtas, and Aurangabad have seen a sharper drop in temperatures, causing discomfort among the residents.

Despite these colder conditions, meteorologists have stated that there is no immediate risk of a cold wave. However, temperatures will continue to gradually decrease in the coming days. The persistent morning fog is expected to cause some inconvenience, though the visibility disruption is likely to remain minimal.

Fog Continues to Affect Visibility Across Multiple Cities

For the past few days, thick fog has been causing significant disruptions across Bihar. More than 10 cities have been affected by reduced visibility, including Patna, Begusarai, Kishanganj, and Bettiah. With the ongoing chilly weather, the fog is expected to persist throughout the morning hours, although the IMD has indicated that it is unlikely to develop into dense fog, which could severely affect transportation.

While the fog may be inconvenient for early risers and commuters, experts believe it will have no significant impact on travel operations, including flights and trains. Light fog is expected to remain over Patna, but it will not lead to major disruptions.

Forecast for the Coming Days: Colder Weather and Gradual Temperature Decline

The IMD’s forecast for the next few days indicates that the cold wave will continue to affect the region, with temperatures likely to drop even further. Over the next 3–4 days, residents of Bihar can expect cold conditions to intensify, particularly during late evenings and early mornings. However, the daytime sunshine will offer temporary relief from the biting cold before temperatures drop again after sunset.

Residents across Bihar are advised to prepare for continued chilly conditions, particularly in the mornings and evenings. While the daytime hours may offer a brief respite, the overall trend points toward colder weather, with the coldest hours occurring during the night.

Patna to Experience Impact of Westerly Winds

Patna, the capital of Bihar, is also expected to feel the effects of the westerly winds, especially on Friday and Saturday. According to forecasts, the minimum temperature in Patna will hover between 11°C and 13°C. Light fog is expected to cover the city, but weather officials have reassured the public that there will be no significant disruption to daily activities, including flight or train operations.

The city’s residents will continue to face chilly mornings and evenings, but there is no immediate threat of dangerous weather conditions in the upcoming days. Despite the cold, the city is likely to remain functional with only minor weather-related inconveniences.

Precautions Advised as Temperatures Continue to Drop

With the ongoing drop in temperatures, officials have urged the public to take necessary precautions. The state government has particularly advised the elderly, children, and people with respiratory issues to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold during early mornings and nights when temperatures are at their lowest. Local authorities are also urging people to stay warm and wear appropriate clothing to protect themselves from the cold.

As winter deepens, it is important for residents to stay vigilant about their health and well-being, especially as colder weather conditions can exacerbate existing health issues. The government has promised to continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary.

Relief During Daytime

While the cold conditions will persist throughout the coming days, there will be some temporary relief for residents during the daytime. The sunshine will provide some warmth, but the cold will return after sunset. For many in Bihar, the coldest time of the day will be in the early mornings and late evenings when temperatures tend to drop the most. Although the fog may continue to affect visibility in the mornings, it is not expected to cause major disruptions to daily life.

As Bihar braces for a colder start to the year, residents are advised to prepare for ongoing chilly weather, especially during the mornings and nights. With the IMD forecasting further drops in temperatures and continued fog, it is important to take precautions to stay warm and healthy. The cold wave will be less intense during the daytime hours, but early mornings and late evenings will remain extremely cold. With temperatures expected to dip further over the next few days, Bihar’s residents should remain vigilant as winter sets in.
