AIIMS Patna Organizes Pink Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, Highlights Importance of Early Detection

Published on

AIIMS Patna took part in the global observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a Pink Walk, a special event aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness, early screening, and healthy living. The event, organized by the Department of Radiation Oncology, was held on Wednesday, drawing a large crowd of doctors, medical students, staff, and residents. It served as an important platform to encourage the community to take proactive steps in preventing and detecting breast cancer at an early stage.

Event Details and Key Participants

The Pink Walk event began at the Admin Block of AIIMS Patna and concluded at the OPD Foyer, covering a designated route within the institute. The walk was inaugurated by a group of prominent figures, including Executive Director (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Medical Superintendent Dr. Anup Kumar, Dean of Academics Dr. Poonam Bhadani, and the Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Pritanjali Singh. The group was joined by various other medical experts from the institution, such as Dr. Nilesh Mani, Dr. Harikesh Bahadur Singh, Dr. Minakshi Mishra, Dr. Upasna (Radiology), Dr. Veena (Plastic Surgery), and Dr. Azhar (Surgical Oncology).

These distinguished faculty members played a key role not only in leading the event but also in educating the participants on the significance of timely medical intervention and screening for breast cancer. Their collective message emphasized the vital role of awareness in ensuring early diagnosis and improving survival rates.

Symbolic Gesture of Hope

The event began with a symbolic gesture, as participants released a number of pink balloons into the air. This act symbolized hope, solidarity, and a shared commitment to raising awareness about breast cancer prevention. The balloons also represented the unity of the medical community, students, and staff in their mission to spread knowledge about the importance of early detection and screening.

Educational Outreach Through Street Play

One of the highlights of the event was a street play or “nukkad natak,” performed by the BSc Nursing students. This captivating performance, staged at the OPD Foyer, focused on the critical message of early detection, regular screening, and self-examination. The play helped underline the importance of routine checks, with the students effectively conveying the need for every woman to be vigilant and proactive about her breast health.

Through this play, the performers reminded the audience that breast cancer, when detected early, can be treated effectively, reducing its mortality rate significantly. The play served as an informative yet engaging tool to educate the general public on the life-saving benefits of early intervention.

Messages from Key Speakers

Brig. Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, addressed the crowd during the event, urging women to adopt healthier lifestyles. He stressed the significance of regular health check-ups and highlighted how timely screening can help in early detection. Dr. Agarwal emphasized that awareness remains one of the most powerful tools in combating breast cancer. He encouraged the public to make breast health a priority and to seek medical advice promptly if any symptoms arise.

Dr. Pritanjali Singh, Head of Radiation Oncology, shared alarming statistics during the event, shedding light on the global and national burden of breast cancer. According to the GLOBOCAN 2022 report, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, with approximately 22.96 lakh cases diagnosed globally, including 1.92 lakh cases in India. Dr. Singh highlighted the sobering fact that a new case of breast cancer is diagnosed every four minutes, and tragically, one person dies every eight minutes due to this disease.

Despite these staggering figures, Dr. Singh pointed out that the majority of these deaths could be prevented if the disease is caught early. She emphasized that aggressive screening programs, combined with public awareness campaigns, have the potential to save countless lives by detecting the disease at a stage where treatment is more effective.

The Rising Challenge of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer has emerged as a major health concern worldwide, and its prevalence continues to rise, particularly among women. In India, the growing number of breast cancer cases is an urgent issue that requires attention. Experts like Dr. Singh believe that tackling this challenge will require a multifaceted approach that includes widespread awareness, improved healthcare infrastructure, and accessible screening programs for women of all ages.

The focus on breast cancer prevention and early detection is crucial, as the disease is often most treatable when diagnosed in its early stages. Regular self-examinations, annual screenings, and routine check-ups are essential for women to stay ahead of the disease and to increase their chances of successful treatment if diagnosed.

AIIMS Patna’s Continued Commitment to Health Awareness

This annual Pink Walk at AIIMS Patna not only serves as a reminder about the importance of breast cancer awareness but also reflects the institution’s ongoing commitment to public health initiatives. By organizing such events, AIIMS Patna aims to foster a culture of proactive health management, where individuals take responsibility for their health and seek timely medical interventions. The event’s focus on early detection, screening, and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle underscores the hospital’s broader mission of providing education and care that extends beyond the walls of the institution.

As part of its comprehensive approach to healthcare, AIIMS Patna continuously advocates for awareness campaigns and community-based initiatives to ensure that crucial health information reaches as many people as possible. Through these efforts, the hospital hopes to inspire a larger movement towards breast cancer prevention and improved outcomes for women everywhere.

The Role of Public Awareness in Fighting Breast Cancer

Public awareness plays a pivotal role in the fight against breast cancer. Many women remain unaware of the simple steps they can take to detect breast cancer early. Educational programs, community outreach, and initiatives like the Pink Walk can help bridge this knowledge gap. When women know what signs to look for and understand the importance of regular screenings, they are more likely to seek help and receive timely treatment.

Moreover, breast cancer awareness is not just about raising alarms but also about creating an environment where women feel supported in taking care of their health. Events like these create spaces for open dialogue, where women can learn, ask questions, and share their experiences.

The Pink Walk at AIIMS Patna represents a significant step toward fostering a healthier community. By bringing together healthcare professionals, students, and the general public, this event worked to shine a spotlight on the importance of breast cancer awareness. The collective effort of all involved in this initiative serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging women to take charge of their health through preventive measures such as regular screenings, self-exams, and lifestyle changes.

As breast cancer remains a global health challenge, initiatives like the Pink Walk are instrumental in spreading life-saving information and urging women to prioritize their breast health. Through consistent efforts like these, AIIMS Patna hopes to contribute to the larger fight against breast cancer, helping to reduce its impact on women’s health and saving lives in the process.

By continuing to raise awareness and encourage early detection, we can make meaningful progress in the fight against breast cancer, ensuring a healthier future for all.
