Heavy Rain Alert in Delhi NCR: IMD Issues Yellow Warning for the Week

Published on

Delhi NCR continues to face the impact of heavy rains, which have led to severe waterlogging in multiple areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh yellow alert, cautioning residents about the possibility of more intense showers accompanied by strong winds. The recent spell has already disrupted daily life, and forecasts suggest that the wet conditions are far from over.

Current Weather Conditions in Delhi NCR

On Thursday morning, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 21.2 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees below the seasonal average. The IMD has projected the maximum temperature to hover around 33 degrees Celsius today. The humidity level at 8:30 am was as high as 97 percent, reflecting the heavy moisture in the air. Within the last 24 hours, the city received 19 millimeters of rainfall, adding to the already waterlogged streets.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert not just for Delhi but also for adjoining regions like Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar. This warning indicates the likelihood of localized flooding, traffic disruptions, and slower commuting across the NCR.

Rainfall Predictions for September 5

According to the IMD, September 5 will bring widespread showers with cloudy skies dominating the day. The maximum temperature is expected to remain near 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may rise slightly to around 23 degrees Celsius.

The forecast also includes a specific yellow alert for Gurugram and Faridabad, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in these districts. Commuters and residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid low-lying flood-prone areas.

Forecast for September 6 and 7: Thunderstorms on the Horizon

Moving into the weekend, the IMD predicts that both September 6 and 7 will see thunderstorm activity across Delhi NCR. Heavy rain combined with strong winds could cause tree falls, traffic snarls, and power outages in certain areas. These conditions are likely to disrupt outdoor activities and travel, making it important for residents to stay updated with weather advisories.

The IMD emphasizes preparedness, especially in regions where drainage systems are inadequate. As heavy downpours combine with stormy winds, the situation could lead to additional waterlogging and safety hazards.

Brief Relief on September 8

A temporary break from intense rainfall is expected on September 8. The forecast suggests partly cloudy skies with limited chances of showers. While this may provide some relief to residents, the humidity levels are likely to remain high, creating discomfort despite reduced rainfall.

Showers to Return on September 9

The brief respite will not last long. By September 9, rain is forecasted to make a comeback. IMD’s update suggests moderate to heavy showers across the capital and adjoining cities. This intermittent pattern of rain will likely keep the city’s drainage and traffic systems under pressure.

Partly Cloudy Conditions Expected on September 10

September 10 is expected to bring partly cloudy skies with only scattered rainfall in some areas. Although the chances of heavy showers will decrease, the overall atmosphere will still remain damp and humid.

Temperature Outlook from September 6 to 10

IMD’s extended forecast indicates that the maximum temperature across the region will range between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius during this period. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature is expected to remain between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius. These moderate temperatures, combined with high humidity, will add to the discomfort of residents.

What the Yellow Alert Means for Residents

A yellow alert is generally issued when weather conditions are likely to cause some disruption but are not expected to be severe enough to warrant red or orange warnings. For Delhi NCR, this means that while rainfall may not reach extreme levels, it could still affect traffic, flights, and daily commuting.

The IMD advises residents to plan their travel carefully, avoid flood-prone routes, and ensure that electrical appliances remain protected from water exposure. Parents are also urged to ensure children remain indoors during thunderstorms to avoid accidents.

Challenges of Waterlogging and Daily Life

The heavy rainfall has already left its mark on Delhi’s streets, with several key routes witnessing severe waterlogging. Areas around Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, and Kalindi Kunj faced massive traffic jams in recent days. Residents reported long delays, with some commuters switching to Delhi Metro as the only viable option.

Local authorities and traffic police are working to manage diversions and provide smoother commuting alternatives, but the persistent rain has made the task challenging. The upcoming spells of rain may continue to test the resilience of the city’s infrastructure.

Delhi NCR is bracing for another round of heavy showers this week, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert. The capital city and nearby regions like Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar will continue to face wet conditions. With thunderstorms predicted for September 6 and 7, followed by intermittent showers until September 10, residents should stay prepared for disruptions in daily life.

The temporary relief expected on September 8 offers only a short break, with rains likely to return soon after. As the monsoon season intensifies, caution, preparedness, and timely updates from the weather department remain key to navigating this challenging period.
