Bihar Weather Update: Rising Heat, Rainfall Deficit, and Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms

Published on

Bihar is currently experiencing a phase of extreme weather fluctuations. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that rainfall activity in the state will remain weak for almost a week. As a result, maximum temperatures are expected to rise by two to three degrees Celsius in the next three days. Humidity levels remain very high, touching nearly 97 percent across many districts. This combination of rising heat and excessive moisture is causing discomfort for residents who are already struggling with harsh weather conditions.

Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms and Lightning

On Monday, the Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for several districts in northwestern and north-central Bihar. According to the forecast, thunderstorms with lightning may occur at isolated places. Wind speed is also expected to reach between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour in some areas. This alert is an important warning for farmers, travelers, and rural communities where lightning strikes often cause casualties during the monsoon months.

Rainfall Deficit Raises Concerns

Rainfall has been uneven across Bihar in recent days. On Sunday, five districts recorded rainfall while many others remained dry. Aurangabad received the highest rainfall at 24.5 millimeters. In contrast, most regions saw only light showers or no rain at all. Purnea registered the highest temperature at 35.4 degrees Celsius, while Motihari recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 24.6 degrees Celsius. Strong winds were also reported from Arwal, with speeds reaching 31 kilometers per hour.

Patna Weather: Cloudy Skies and Humidity

The capital city Patna has also witnessed changes in weather patterns. Meteorologists expect partly cloudy skies on Monday with chances of light rain and lightning at a few locations. On Sunday morning, drizzle was reported in some parts of Patna. Cloud cover continued during the day, providing temporary relief from direct sunshine. However, the humidity level remained at 74 percent, which made the afternoon hours particularly uncomfortable. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 29.1 degrees Celsius.

Rising Discomfort Due to Heat and Humidity

Although rainfall activity has weakened, humidity remains persistently high in Bihar. The moisture levels in the atmosphere combined with rising temperatures are creating an oppressive environment. Meteorologists warn that people will continue to feel excessive heat, especially in the afternoon. The condition is likely to persist for several more days until rainfall activity increases again.

Impact on Daily Life and Health Risks

The combination of high humidity and rising temperatures poses health risks. Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, sunstroke, and fatigue are more likely during this period. Doctors in Patna have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take preventive measures against heat exhaustion. Farmers working in open fields and laborers in construction sites remain the most vulnerable to heat stress.

Lightning Risk in Rural Areas

Lightning strikes continue to be a major concern in Bihar during the monsoon season. The yellow alert for thunderstorms includes warnings about possible lightning in north Bihar. The Meteorological Department has urged people to avoid open areas during storms. Villagers often face the highest casualties as they are exposed to the sky while working in agricultural fields. Authorities have reminded citizens to follow safety measures and take shelter during lightning events.

Decline in Rainfall and Agricultural Concerns

The decline in rainfall activity could affect agricultural operations in several districts. Farmers in Bihar depend heavily on monsoon rains for paddy cultivation. A prolonged dry phase may delay sowing and reduce soil moisture required for crop growth. In districts where only light rainfall has been recorded, irrigation needs may rise. Agricultural experts suggest that farmers should prepare for alternative water sources if the weak monsoon trend continues.

Comparative Temperatures Across Districts

Different districts of Bihar are showing significant variation in temperatures. Purnea has remained one of the hottest locations with maximum temperature crossing 35 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Motihari has reported cooler nights with minimum temperature falling below 25 degrees Celsius. Patna remains in the middle range, but high humidity makes conditions more uncomfortable than temperature levels indicate. These variations highlight how local geography influences weather patterns within the state.

Weekly Forecast for Bihar

According to the extended forecast, Bihar is unlikely to receive widespread rainfall in the coming week. Only isolated locations in north Bihar may receive light showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. Meteorologists expect maximum temperatures to gradually rise across most districts. The weather office has warned residents to prepare for increased discomfort caused by heat and humidity. However, there is still a chance of temporary relief if scattered rainfall occurs in localized areas.

Patna Weather Outlook for the Week

For Patna, the forecast suggests partly cloudy conditions for the next few days. Light rainfall is possible in some areas, though widespread showers are unlikely. The capital city may witness fluctuations in temperature, but the overall heat index will remain high due to persistent humidity. The next three days are expected to bring more uncomfortable afternoons, with temperatures climbing above 34 degrees Celsius.

Humidity Levels and Their Impact

Humidity is a critical factor in the current weather pattern across Bihar. With atmospheric moisture levels reaching up to 97 percent, even small increases in temperature feel more intense. People experience discomfort because the body struggles to cool itself through sweating. This effect, known as the heat index, is making conditions harsher than the actual recorded temperatures. Experts suggest staying indoors during peak afternoon hours to reduce exposure to heat stress.

Wind Speed and Weather Fluctuations

Along with rising temperatures and humidity, wind patterns are also changing across the state. Strong winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are expected in some districts. Such winds may provide temporary relief from the heat, but they also carry risks of uprooting weak structures and damaging crops. Farmers are advised to secure their standing crops and avoid unnecessary exposure during stormy weather.

Weather in Other Cities of Bihar

Apart from Patna, several other cities have reported fluctuating weather. In Aurangabad, heavy rainfall provided some cooling effect but increased local waterlogging problems. In Arwal, strong winds created challenges for outdoor workers and farmers. Northern districts reported thunderstorms and light rainfall, while central regions remained hot and dry. The pattern highlights the uneven distribution of rainfall in Bihar during the current phase of the monsoon season.

State Authorities and Weather Preparedness

The Bihar government has been closely monitoring weather developments. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning events. The disaster management department continues to issue advisories for rural areas where lightning strikes are most dangerous. In urban centers, health departments are spreading awareness about heat-related illnesses. Local administrations are also preparing to respond to emergencies caused by sudden storms.

Bihar continues to face a challenging weather scenario with rising temperatures, high humidity, and weak rainfall activity. The yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning highlights the risks of sudden storms. While some districts experience heavy rainfall, many remain dry and hot. Patna’s weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with chances of light showers, but humidity levels will continue to cause discomfort. Residents are advised to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and prepare for uncertain weather conditions in the coming week.
