The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), currently located in South Block, is preparing for a historic shift. After 78 years, the nerve center of India’s executive branch will move to the newly constructed Executive Enclave, part of the ambitious Central Vista Project. The relocation will bring the PMO closer to the Prime Minister’s residence and provide state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Government sources confirmed that the new PMO may also receive a new name. The proposed name is expected to reflect the spirit of “seva,” symbolizing service to the people.

Why the PMO is shifting

The move from South Block to the Executive Enclave has been driven by two major concerns: shortage of space and lack of modern facilities.

South Block, built during the British era, has long been the administrative hub. But the building has struggled to meet the demands of a modern government. Limited space, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation have restricted efficiency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated “Kartavya Bhawan-3,” housing the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Personnel. During the event, he emphasized the need for modern office spaces. He pointed out that administrative machinery was still functioning from colonial-era buildings, which lacked the facilities required for 21st-century governance.

Features of the new Executive Enclave

The new Executive Enclave has been designed to bring together key offices in a single complex. Apart from the Prime Minister’s Office, it will also house the Cabinet Secretariat and the National Security Council Secretariat.

An advanced conferencing facility has been added to enhance coordination across ministries. This integrated approach is expected to speed up decision-making, improve security, and modernize the working environment.

Located near the Prime Minister’s residence, the enclave will reduce travel time and ensure better connectivity between the PM’s home and office. Officials believe this proximity will make the PMO more efficient.

A new name for the PMO

Sources suggest that the new PMO may be given a new name. The idea is to align the office more closely with the principle of service. Prime Minister Modi has already set the tone by declaring during his third term’s first address:

“The PMO should belong to the people. This is not Modi’s PMO.”

This statement highlighted his vision of the Prime Minister’s Office as an institution dedicated to citizens rather than individuals.

The renaming is expected to reflect this philosophy, creating an identity based on transparency, accessibility, and service.

Transformation of North and South Block

As the PMO and other administrative offices move to new complexes, the historic North Block and South Block buildings will undergo a transformation. These iconic structures, which served as the central hub of governance for nearly eight decades, will be converted into museums.

The new museum will be called “Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum,” designed to showcase India’s cultural heritage and civilizational journey. According to officials, the museum will provide a narrative of India’s glorious past, dynamic present, and promising future.

A collaboration agreement has already been signed between the National Museum and France Museums Development. Experts believe the museum will become a global landmark, reflecting India’s diversity and history.

Central Vista Project and its vision

The PMO shift is part of the larger Central Vista Project, one of the most ambitious redevelopment plans in India’s history.

The project aims to revamp the heart of New Delhi, creating modern infrastructure while preserving heritage. It includes the construction of the new Parliament building, residences for the Vice President and Prime Minister, and multiple secretariat buildings.

The new PMO is a crucial part of this vision, combining efficiency with architectural elegance. Designed with sustainability in mind, the enclave is expected to incorporate energy-efficient systems, secure digital networks, and modern workspaces.

Modernizing governance through infrastructure

The shift to the new PMO is not only about space but also about redefining governance. Modern facilities will enable better coordination between ministries. High-tech conferencing halls will allow seamless interaction between officials, even across multiple locations.

The Cabinet Secretariat and National Security Council Secretariat being housed under one roof ensures better integration of security and administrative functions. This step strengthens India’s ability to respond swiftly to both domestic and international challenges.

Symbolic importance of the move

The relocation of the PMO from South Block, a colonial-era building, carries symbolic significance. It marks a transition from colonial legacies to a modern, self-reliant administrative framework.

By shifting to a new address, the government is sending a strong message about efficiency, modernization, and India’s forward-looking approach. The planned renaming of the PMO adds another layer of symbolism, reinforcing the government’s focus on public service.

Challenges in relocation

Shifting such a critical office comes with challenges. Security arrangements must be enhanced, digital systems upgraded, and infrastructure tested thoroughly before the move. Coordination between multiple ministries during the transition also requires detailed planning.

However, government officials have assured that the process will be smooth, with no disruption in essential decision-making or communication. Trial runs and security drills are already underway.

Public expectations from the new PMO

Citizens expect the new Prime Minister’s Office to be more open, efficient, and people-centric. The government’s repeated emphasis on “seva” or service raises hopes that the PMO will focus on accessibility.

Digital outreach, grievance redressal, and transparency in communication are among the areas where people expect improvement. The advanced facilities in the Executive Enclave may make these goals achievable.

Museums to preserve history

The conversion of North and South Block into museums ensures that India’s administrative history will not be forgotten. These structures, central to governance for decades, will now serve as cultural landmarks.

Visitors will experience India’s story through curated exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays. By collaborating with France Museums Development, the government seeks to create world-class facilities that attract global attention.

Officials describe the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum as a project that bridges heritage with innovation. It will preserve the memory of the colonial administrative setup while celebrating India’s independent journey.

The New PMO shift 2025 marks a turning point in India’s governance structure. Moving from South Block to the Executive Enclave after 78 years, the Prime Minister’s Office is set to redefine its role. With modern facilities, advanced security, and closer proximity to the PM’s residence, the new office represents efficiency and progress.

The possibility of renaming the PMO reflects the government’s commitment to public service and inclusivity. Meanwhile, the conversion of North and South Block into the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum preserves history while presenting India’s cultural richness to the world.

Together, these steps under the Central Vista Project symbolize India’s resolve to combine tradition with modernity, creating a governance model rooted in service and progress.
