Bihar Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Storm, and Lightning Warning Issued for 18 Districts

Published on

On 15 August 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for 18 districts in Bihar. The warning covers the possibility of strong storms accompanied by lightning strikes. Several northern districts could also experience heavy rainfall, while some southeastern regions may see intense showers.

According to the forecast, high wind speeds and lightning activity are expected during the day. The IMD has urged residents in affected areas to take precautions and avoid open spaces during thunderstorms.

Rain Forecast for North and Southeastern Bihar

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of North Bihar, with isolated intense showers in southeastern districts. These weather conditions are linked to moisture-laden winds moving across the state, increasing the risk of thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

Patna, the state capital, is expected to have a partly cloudy sky for most of the day. There is a possibility of rain in some areas, along with lightning and thunder at isolated spots.

Districts Under Yellow Alert

The 18 districts under the yellow alert include Khagaria, Kishanganj, Jamui, Saharsa, Nawada, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Patna, Jehanabad, Gaya, Araria, Supaul, Madhepura, Sheikhpura, Banka, Munger, and Begusarai.

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain indoors during storm activity. Authorities have urged people to avoid waterlogged areas, agricultural fields, and metal structures during lightning events.

Weather Conditions in the Last 24 Hours

In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in five districts of Bihar. Saharsa received the highest rainfall at 2.1 millimetres. Temperatures have risen in several areas, with a spike of up to 5°C in maximum readings.

Valmiki Nagar in West Champaran recorded the highest temperature at 34°C, while the lowest temperature of 25°C was noted in Gaya and Vaishali.

Flood Situation Worsens in Bihar

Continuous rainfall over recent weeks has caused several rivers in Bihar to swell, creating flood-like conditions in many areas. Low-lying regions have been submerged, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas. He instructed officials to maintain readiness for relief and rescue operations. Emergency teams have been deployed to assist displaced families and ensure the supply of essential goods.

Precautions for Residents

The IMD has advised residents in storm-affected districts to take the following measures:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

  • Avoid open fields, tall trees, and water bodies during storm activity.

  • Secure loose outdoor items to prevent damage from high winds.

Bihar is bracing for a challenging weather situation this Independence Day. With heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning expected in multiple districts, residents are urged to remain alert and follow official safety guidelines. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, particularly in flood-prone areas, to ensure timely action if conditions worsen.
