The Ganga River has unleashed its fury in Farrukhabad, breaking a two-decade flood record. Over 100 villages have turned into islands, leaving nearly 23,000 families affected. The flood situation is equally concerning in Kannauj, where the Ganga is approaching the danger mark.

Ganga Water Level Surges Beyond Danger Mark

In Farrukhabad, the water level of the Ganga has surpassed the flood levels recorded in 2010. The devastation stretches from Kampil’s Katri to the lowlands of Shamsabad, the Ganga belt, nearby areas of Sadar tehsil, and Bhojpur in Kamalganj. The worst impact is being felt in the Ganga floodplain region.

Both the Ganga and Ramganga rivers have surrounded more than 100 villages. Official records show over 3,645 hectares of crops submerged under floodwater. On Wednesday, the Ganga’s water level rose by 15 cm to reach 137.45 meters, which is 35 cm above the danger mark. Similarly, the Ramganga rose by 10 cm to 136.90 meters, standing 30 cm above its warning level.

Kannauj on Alert as Water Approaches Danger Level

In Kannauj, the Ganga has started inundating villages near Mehndighat, including Bakshipur and Kasimpur. Water has begun entering nearby settlements, although the river’s level remains 29 cm below the danger mark for now.

Tragic Incident: Former Village Head Missing in Floodwaters

In the Tarai region of Kaimganj, the floodwaters claimed a former village head on Wednesday. Nandkishore alias Bhure, a resident of Motingla village, ventured out with a companion from Pachrauli Mahadevpur. While attempting to launch a new boat using a tractor, the absence of rowing equipment forced them to wade through the water.

The strong current swept both men into deeper waters. Villagers managed to rescue Bhure, but Nandkishore was carried away by the forceful stream.

Local authorities, including revenue officials Deepak Kumar and Ashish Verma, along with police teams, rushed to the scene. Despite extensive search efforts, the former village head remained missing at the time of reporting. His family is in distress, and the search operation continues with community assistance.

Education Disrupted as 185 Schools Close

Floodwaters from the Ganga have forced the closure of 185 government schools in Farrukhabad. Teachers are unable to access these schools, halting all teaching activities.

District Basic Education Officer Anupam Awasthi reported that 85 schools in Rajepur block, 42 in Kaimganj, 19 in Badhpur, and 39 in Shamsabad are surrounded by water. These schools will reopen only once the water level recedes.

Severity of the 2025 Floods

This year’s floods in Farrukhabad have already surpassed the severity of the 2010 disaster. The combined flooding from the Ganga and Ramganga has affected not only agricultural land but also essential infrastructure. With thousands displaced, the administration faces the dual challenge of relief operations and preventing further damage.

Relief and Rescue Efforts Underway

Authorities have begun evacuating vulnerable residents to safer areas. Efforts include distributing relief materials, arranging temporary shelters, and deploying boats for rescue operations. However, with water levels still rising, the threat remains far from over.
