Bihar Government Faces Student Protests Over STET Exam Delay

In Bihar, the government has announced plans to conduct the TRE-4 (Teacher Recruitment Examination) very soon. However, this announcement has raised concerns among students, as the STET 2025 (State Teacher Eligibility Test) has still not been held. The STET exam is mandatory for individuals who wish to become teachers in Bihar. Despite the government’s focus on holding the TRE-4 before the elections, there has been no clarity or mention regarding the STET exam. This has led to growing frustration among students, who have now taken to the streets to demand answers.

Student Protest in Patna

On Thursday, students in large numbers took to the streets of Patna to protest against the government’s inaction regarding the STET exam. The protesters, primarily from student organizations, marched from Bhikhna Pahadi to Patna University and then proceeded towards Gandhi Maidan. The protest caused significant traffic disruption, with Ashok Rajpath completely blocked as the students raised slogans against the government.

The students carried placards and banners, calling out the government for what they believe is a misleading approach towards education and employment in the state. Their main grievance was that the government’s focus on conducting the TRE-4 examination without addressing the STET exam is unfair and a disservice to aspiring teachers and unemployed youth in Bihar.

The Government’s Focus on TRE-4 Examination

While the government has promised to conduct the TRE-4 exam before the elections, students argue that the STET exam, which is a prerequisite for teaching positions, should not be ignored. They feel that rushing the TRE-4 without first addressing the STET will only exacerbate the situation and leave many aspiring teachers in limbo.

The government’s silence on the STET exam has been a point of contention. Students argue that without the STET, the TRE-4 exam holds little value for those who have yet to clear the eligibility requirements. The lack of clarity from the authorities has led to a sense of insecurity among thousands of students who have been preparing for the STET exam for a long time.

Protestors Demand Transparency and Action

The protesters have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of action on this issue. They are demanding transparency in the education department’s functioning and insist that the STET exam must be held before any further examinations, including the TRE-4. Their rally, which began at Bhikhna Pahadi, was a way for students to make their voices heard, as they planned to continue their march to Dakk Bangla Chowk and ultimately to the Chief Minister’s residence.

Concerns About the Impact on Students

The delay in holding the STET exam has left many students feeling helpless and betrayed. The protestors argue that the government’s decision to prioritize TRE-4 before addressing the STET exam creates a sense of false hope. Many students have invested considerable time and resources in preparing for the STET, only to find that it is being sidelined in favor of a recruitment exam that they believe is being rushed through without proper planning.

The students’ concerns are valid, as the STET exam is an essential step for anyone looking to pursue a career as a teacher in the state. Without the STET, students feel that they are being left behind, especially as the government prepares to conduct the TRE-4 without addressing the fundamental issue of eligibility.

Demands for Immediate Action

The student protesters are making it clear that their demand is simple: the government must prioritize the STET exam and ensure that it is held before the TRE-4. They are calling for transparency in the recruitment process and want to ensure that all candidates are given equal opportunities based on their eligibility, as defined by the STET.

The students’ march is not just about the STET exam; it is a call for justice and fairness in the recruitment process. By holding the STET exam and ensuring that all aspiring teachers meet the necessary qualifications, the government can help restore faith in the educational system and its policies.

The protests in Patna reflect the growing frustration and sense of injustice among students regarding the delay in the STET exam. The students are rightfully concerned that without the STET, the TRE-4 exam will be meaningless for many aspiring teachers. Their demands for transparency, clarity, and fairness in the recruitment process are reasonable and should be addressed by the government.

As the government prepares to conduct the TRE-4, it must ensure that the STET exam is not forgotten. Holding the STET exam will ensure that only eligible candidates are considered for teaching positions, thereby upholding the integrity of the education system in Bihar. Until then, the protests will likely continue, as students will not stop until they see the changes they demand. The ball is now in the government’s court to respond to the students’ concerns and address the ongoing issue surrounding the STET exam.
