“She was a remarkable personality,” the CM said. “I have met her on various occasions. Her humility stood out.” He further confirmed that the government had directed that her funeral be held with complete state honors.

There’s also a proposal to name the 11th Cross Road in Malleswaram after the late actress. The government will take a final decision after consultations.

B. Saroja Devi’s Final Journey

The last rites of B. Saroja Devi will take place in her hometown. Her mortal remains were kept for public homage, where CM Siddaramaiah paid his final respects in person. He later took to social media to express his condolences and share images from the ceremony.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Siddaramaiah wrote, “I paid my last respects to B. Saroja Devi. She was an exceptional actress. Her work across five languages left a lasting impact. She brought grace to every role. The film industry has lost a shining star.”

A Star Across Five Film Industries

B. Saroja Devi was one of the few actresses who ruled multiple film industries. Her career spanned over seven decades. She acted in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. Her performances received acclaim from critics, fans, and peers alike.

She made her acting debut at a young age and earned the title “Abhinava Saraswathi.” This title reflected her mastery in acting and performance art. Over her illustrious career, she worked with legendary actors like:

  • Dilip Kumar

  • Rajendra Kumar

  • Dev Anand

  • Shivaji Ganesan

  • N.T. Rama Rao

  • M.G. Ramachandran (MGR)

  • Dr. Rajkumar

Her Contributions to Kannada Cinema

Although Saroja Devi was popular across India, her roots remained deeply connected to Karnataka. She was one of the first Kannada actresses to gain pan-India stardom. Her success paved the way for many aspiring actors from the region.

CM Siddaramaiah emphasized her influence on the Kannada film industry. “She played a vital role in shaping and promoting Kannada cinema,” he said.

Her iconic performances in Kannada films brought attention to regional storytelling. Several of her movies are still celebrated for their depth and cultural richness.

B. Saroja Devi’s Long and Illustrious Career

B. Saroja Devi started her film career in the 1950s. Her expressive face and elegant dialogue delivery won her widespread acclaim. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she successfully balanced careers in multiple languages.

In Hindi cinema, she starred opposite leading actors in major blockbusters. Films like Paigham, Sasural, and Beti Bete remain fan favorites. In Tamil cinema, her pairings with MGR were particularly famous.

She acted in over 190 films. Many of these became box-office hits. Her roles often represented strong, graceful women who carried emotional strength.

Her commitment to performance went beyond the screen. She was a trained classical dancer and often brought a theatrical flair to her roles. Her voice, posture, and expressions were admired by generations of actors.

Accolades and National Recognition

Over the years, B. Saroja Devi received numerous awards and honors. Some of the most prestigious include:

  • Padma Bhushan

  • Padma Shri

  • Karnataka Ratna

  • Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award

Condolences from the Film Fraternity

Actors, directors, producers, and fans paid tribute after news of her demise broke. Social media was flooded with memories, posters, and heartfelt messages.

Many stars from the Kannada and Tamil film industries remembered her as a guiding light. Veteran actors shared anecdotes of working with her. Younger artists praised her dedication and humility.

One actor tweeted, “She was a goddess on screen and a humble soul off it.”

Another director mentioned, “She brought grace and dignity to every role she played.”

Film associations from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh issued condolence statements. Several cinema halls even observed moments of silence before screenings.

A Life Beyond Cinema

Despite her massive stardom, B. Saroja Devi lived a private life away from media glare. She was married to Sri Harsha, a civil engineer. After his death in 1986, she gradually reduced her screen appearances.

In her later years, she focused on philanthropy and public welfare. She supported causes related to women’s health, education, and cultural heritage. She was also part of film advisory boards and cultural panels.

Her grounded nature and focus on giving back made her beloved beyond the silver screen.

B. Saroja Devi’s death marks the end of a golden era. For seven decades, she defined what it meant to be a true cinema legend. Her legacy will live on through her films, awards, and the millions who admired her.

The streets of Karnataka, especially Bengaluru, mourn the loss of a beloved daughter. Fans gathered outside her home and in public venues to light candles and offer floral tributes.

Film historians believe her contribution will continue to inspire generations. Her journey from a local performer to a national icon remains unmatched.
