RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s Remarks on Age Spark Political Buzz; Congress Targets PM Modi Ahead of His 75th Birthday

Published on

A subtle remark by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat during an event in Nagpur has triggered a fresh wave of political commentary. His reference to stepping aside after the age of 75—quoting a late Sangh ideologue—has prompted the Congress party to take a sharp jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is set to turn 75 this September.

This development has intensified speculation over retirement age norms within the Sangh Parivar, and how they might relate to the current leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly with the approaching 2029 general elections.

RSS Chief Refers to Ideological Tradition of Retirement at 75

During a public event in Nagpur on July 9, 2025, Mohan Bhagwat recalled a statement by late Sangh ideologue Moropant Pingley, who believed that individuals should consider stepping away from active responsibility after the age of 75.

Bhagwat reportedly said, “When the shawl of 75 is wrapped over your shoulders, it means you’ve reached a respectable age. It is time to step aside and give space to others to carry forward the mission.”

While Bhagwat did not directly mention any political figure, the statement has drawn widespread attention as it coincides with Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming 75th birthday on September 17, 2025.

Congress’ Jairam Ramesh Reacts Sharply on X

Reacting to Bhagwat’s comments, Congress general secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to target the Prime Minister. Posting in Hindi, Ramesh said:

“Poor award-seeking Prime Minister! What a homecoming — he returns from abroad only to be reminded by the Sarsanghchalak that he’s turning 75 on September 17. But the Prime Minister could also remind the Sarsanghchalak that he too is turning 75 on September 11! One arrow, two targets!”

This was a clear reference to the fact that Mohan Bhagwat himself will also turn 75 just days before PM Modi. Ramesh’s post appears to be a political dig wrapped in sarcasm, suggesting that the Prime Minister and RSS chief both fall under the same philosophical guideline, if it’s to be applied consistently.

PM Modi Recently Honored Abroad

The timing of Bhagwat’s remark also comes days after PM Modi returned from a foreign tour, where he was honored with Namibia’s highest civilian award. His trip was part of India’s diplomatic outreach in Africa and had drawn widespread coverage across Indian media.

Congress’ mention of this in their reaction seems to imply that despite such accolades, the Prime Minister is not exempt from internal expectations or cultural norms within the Sangh.

Age Limit Norms in BJP and Sangh

The question of retirement at 75 is not new within the BJP-RSS ecosystem. In the past, several senior leaders including LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and others were gently eased out of active roles after crossing the 75-year age mark, especially after 2014 when the Modi-Shah era began consolidating power.

Though there’s no official policy, many believe the 75-age norm is informally followed in the Sangh Parivar — especially when it comes to electoral politics or leadership roles.

With PM Modi approaching the milestone, speculation is growing over whether he will make way for a new generation of leadership post-2025 or continue to lead the party into the next general election in 2029.

Political Significance of Bhagwat’s Statement

While Bhagwat’s comment might seem like a philosophical reminder, it carries deeper implications:

  • Symbolic timing: Just two months before PM Modi’s 75th birthday.

  • Strategic messaging: Could be a signal to initiate leadership discussions within the RSS-BJP framework.

  • Power balance: May reflect internal dynamics or subtle nudges to preserve ideological traditions.

However, BJP sources have downplayed any such interpretation, calling it a “misreading” of Bhagwat’s statement, emphasizing that it was “general in nature and not directed at any individual.”

Opposition Sees an Opening

The Congress and other opposition parties have used this moment to once again question PM Modi’s long-term political ambitions, especially after his third consecutive term in office. Many in the opposition camp have consistently alleged that Modi does not abide by the same rules he once used to sideline senior BJP leaders.

A senior Congress functionary stated anonymously:
“If the 75-year rule was applied to leaders like Advani and Joshi, why not to Modi? Rules should be the same for everyone.”

Public and Media Reaction

On social media, the topic trended under hashtags like #Modi75, #BhagwatStatement, and #OneArrowTwoTargets, with users debating the underlying message of the RSS chief’s remarks.

Media houses across the country picked up on the statement, with several opinion pieces emerging about succession planning, retirement age, and the role of tradition in modern Indian politics.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to mark his 75th birthday in September 2025, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s indirect but symbolic reference to stepping aside after that age has stirred political and ideological debate. Whether the remark was philosophical or pointed remains open to interpretation, but it has certainly added a new dimension to ongoing discussions about leadership, succession, and legacy within the ruling establishment.
