A mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh early Friday morning, causing tremors that were felt across the region. The quake occurred at 6:23 AM IST, with the epicenter located 5 kilometers below the surface, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Authorities have confirmed that there was no loss of life or property, although brief panic was reported in some areas.

Earthquake Details: Magnitude, Epicenter, Depth

  • Magnitude: 3.5 on the Richter scale

  • Time: 6:23:56 AM IST, Friday, July 11, 2025

  • Location: Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh

  • Latitude: 32.36° N

  • Longitude: 76.18° E

  • Depth: 5 kilometers

  • Reported by: India Meteorological Department (IMD)

The epicenter of the earthquake was pinpointed within Chamba, which lies in a high seismic zone, making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in northern India.

No Casualties or Property Damage

As per initial assessments from the local administration and disaster management teams, there were no reports of injuries or structural damage. However, residents in parts of Chamba reported a mild tremor and momentary panic, especially those living in high-rise buildings or old structures.

District officials remain on high alert, and emergency response teams have been instructed to monitor any aftershocks or structural threats.

 Chamba: A High-Risk Seismic Zone

Chamba is known to be one of Himachal Pradesh’s most earthquake-sensitive regions, owing to its position near the Himalayan seismic belt. The region has a long history of tremors, and seismic activity here is not uncommon.

Other parts of the state, including Shimla and Mandi, are also considered to be in Seismic Zone IV and V, as per the classification by India’s earthquake zoning map. These zones are most prone to moderate to severe earthquakes.

Recent Seismic Activity in North India

This tremor follows a series of mild earthquakes in North India over the past few days. Just a day prior, on Thursday, twin tremors were recorded in Delhi-NCR and Haryana, with Gurawara village in Rewari identified as the epicenter.

Although these quakes were also low in magnitude, the frequency of seismic activity across the northern belt has raised public concerns, prompting authorities to review preparedness measures.

Preparedness and Public Safety Measures

While the 3.5 magnitude tremor in Himachal today didn’t cause any serious damage, authorities are reminding the public about the importance of earthquake safety and awareness.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recommend the following:

Earthquake Safety Tips:

  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, and glass doors during tremors

  • Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture

  • If outside, move to open areas away from buildings and trees

  • Avoid elevators; use stairs during and after tremors

  • Keep an emergency kit ready with essential supplies

Local officials have also issued advisories for schools, hospitals, and community buildings to review their structural integrity and update their emergency evacuation plans.

Understanding the Earthquake Intensity

An earthquake of 3.5 magnitude is considered “minor” on the Richter scale. Such tremors are rarely destructive, especially if they occur deep underground and away from urban centers.

However, in mountainous terrains like Himachal Pradesh, even mild tremors can trigger landslides or cracks, especially in unstable zones or near riverbeds. That’s why early response and monitoring play a crucial role.

Geological Significance of the Region

The Himalayan region, including Himachal Pradesh, lies along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This ongoing plate movement creates high geological stress, making the area susceptible to frequent seismic disturbances.

Chamba district specifically falls near the Main Central Thrust (MCT) — a major fault line that contributes to regional seismicity. The region’s rugged topography, coupled with rapid construction and tourism growth, makes earthquake readiness even more critical.

Key Takeaways: Himachal Pradesh Earthquake, July 11, 2025

  • A 3.5 magnitude earthquake shook Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh early Friday morning

  • No casualties or property damage were reported

  • The quake was centered 5 km underground, making it shallow but not highly impactful

  • This is part of ongoing seismic activity across North India, following recent tremors in Delhi-NCR and Haryana

  • Authorities are on alert, and the public has been advised to follow earthquake safety protocols

Although today’s earthquake in Himachal Pradesh was mild, it is yet another reminder of the region’s seismic vulnerability. With Chamba sitting on an active fault zone, the risk of future quakes remains, making preparedness and public awareness essential.
