Bihar IMD Issues Alert as Heavy Rain Hits 19 Districts, Break in Showers Expected After July 8

Published on

As the monsoon gradually weakens in Bihar, weather conditions continue to keep the state on its toes. Despite the overall decline in rainfall activity, certain regions, including Patna, Gaya, and several districts in South Bihar, are experiencing heavy rainstorms, with the possibility of more severe weather in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for 19 districts, signaling rough weather ahead, including thunderstorms and lightning. Here’s a detailed analysis of the situation.

Weather Alert for 19 Districts: Thunderstorms and Rain Expected

On July 5, 2025, heavy rains lashed several parts of Bihar, including Patna, Sahrsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Kishanganj, and Supaul. This sudden downpour was accompanied by gusty winds, creating havoc in these regions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 19 districts, indicating the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning, particularly in South Bihar, including Patna, Gaya, Jehanabad, and other neighboring areas.

The forecast suggests that the rain will persist through the weekend, with expectations of thunderstorms and lightning across the southern districts. As of today, there are predictions for moderate rainfall, with thunderstorms continuing to affect Patna, Gaya, and the surrounding districts. However, according to experts at the Patna Meteorological Center, the monsoon is beginning to weaken, which will result in a drop in rainfall intensity by the middle of July.

Weather Shifts Expected After July 8: Drier Conditions Ahead

In a notable shift in weather patterns, the IMD has announced that rainfall will significantly decrease starting July 8, with increased humidity levels expected in the region. The temperature is also set to rise in the coming days, signaling the end of the frequent rains for now.

The scientists at the Patna Meteorological Center explain that while the rain will ease after July 8, the humidity levels will surge, making the weather more uncomfortable. The day temperatures will rise slightly, and only sporadic light showers may occur in select areas, especially in North Bihar districts like Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, and West Champaran.

Impact on Temperature and Humidity Levels: Rising Heat

As the rainfall subsides, Bihar is also witnessing a rise in temperature. Friday, July 4, saw an increase in temperatures across the state, with the maximum temperature soaring by up to 4°C. The highest recorded temperature on Friday was 37.8°C in Gopalganj, while the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6°C in Pusa.

With the reduction in rainfall and the increase in temperatures, residents are expected to experience warmer and more humid conditions. The weather experts predict that this shift in weather patterns will lead to discomfort, particularly in regions where rainfall had previously kept the temperature in check.

Detailed District-wise Weather Forecast

The weather forecast indicates that on July 5, 2025, Patna, along with several other districts in South Bihar, will continue to see cloudy skies and possible light to moderate rainfall. The following areas may experience rainfall and thunderstorms, with winds blowing at speeds of 30-40 km/h:

  • Patna

  • Gaya

  • Jehanabad

  • Bhojpur

  • Buxar

  • Kaimur

  • Rohtas

  • Aurangabad

  • Arwal

  • Nalanda

  • Nawada

  • Sheikhpura

  • Lakhisarai

  • Begusarai

  • Jamui

  • Munger

  • Khagaria

Residents of these regions are advised to stay cautious as thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds are likely to disrupt daily activities. Given the intensity of the weather, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, urging people to stay indoors during the worst weather conditions.

Changes in Weather After July 7: No Major Alerts Expected

According to the IMD, after July 7, no major weather warnings are anticipated in the state. This signifies that the majority of the rainstorms will subside, leaving behind a drier, more humid atmosphere. As rainfall decreases, people in Bihar, especially in the northern and central parts of the state, will experience increased humidity levels and warmer temperatures.

While light rain may continue sporadically, particularly in select districts in North Bihar, the major disruptions from rainfall are expected to be over by the beginning of the second week of July.

Temperature Fluctuations and AQI (Air Quality Index) Overview

With the rise in temperatures, residents of Bihar have also noticed fluctuating air quality levels. As of July 5, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in major cities like Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Gaya shows moderate to good air quality, with AQI values ranging between 40-62, which is generally safe for outdoor activities.

  • Patna: Maximum Temp 35.5°C / Minimum Temp 27.8°C, AQI: 61

  • Muzaffarpur: Maximum Temp 34.8°C / Minimum Temp 28.0°C, AQI: 47

  • Gaya: Maximum Temp 34.4°C / Minimum Temp 25.8°C, AQI: 62

  • Purnia: Maximum Temp 34.6°C / Minimum Temp 27.3°C, AQI: 35

  • Bhagalpur: Maximum Temp 33.7°C / Minimum Temp 27.2°C, AQI: 55

Although the air quality remains relatively good, the impending heatwave may slightly degrade the air quality, particularly with rising humidity levels.

As Bihar braces itself for a brief pause in the monsoon rains, the upcoming days will bring a mix of hot, humid weather and occasional light showers. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather warnings, particularly in regions expected to experience thunderstorms. The IMD’s forecasts point to a rise in temperature, combined with humidity, which may make the weather uncomfortable.
