Uttar Pradesh Braces for Monsoon Revival: Heavy Rains Expected Across 66 Districts

Published on

After a brief hiatus that saw the state grapple with scorching heat and oppressive humidity, the monsoon is making a strong comeback to Uttar Pradesh. The crucial monsoon trough line, which had previously shifted southwards, is now returning over the state, promising widespread relief and a significant increase in rainfall activity. Residents across Uttar Pradesh can anticipate a substantial change in weather patterns, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in numerous districts over the next 48 hours.

Monsoon Trough’s Return Signals Enhanced Rainfall

The primary reason behind this anticipated surge in monsoon activity is the repositioning of the monsoon trough line. This vital atmospheric feature, which dictates the intensity and distribution of monsoon rains, had moved over Madhya Pradesh, leading to a temporary lull in rainfall across Uttar Pradesh. Its return signifies a revitalization of the monsoon’s eastern branch, bringing back the much-needed precipitation. This shift began to manifest on Saturday afternoon, with isolated heavy downpours reported in some areas.

Intense Downpours Reported, More on the Horizon

In the past 24 hours, districts like Sonbhadra and Saharanpur experienced isolated incidents of heavy rainfall, offering a precursor to the more widespread activity expected. The IMD predicts that the monsoon will become fully active across Uttar Pradesh in the next 24 hours, leading to light to moderate rainfall. However, the intensity is set to escalate over the subsequent 48 hours, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern and central parts of the state.

Very Heavy Rain Alerts for 13 Districts

The meteorological department has issued a “very heavy rain” alert for 13 specific districts, urging residents and authorities in these areas to remain vigilant. These districts are:

  • Balrampur
  • Shravasti
  • Bahraich
  • Lakhimpur Kheri
  • Saharanpur
  • Muzaffarnagar
  • Bijnor
  • Amroha
  • Moradabad
  • Rampur
  • Bareilly
  • Pilibhit
  • Shahjahanpur

These regions are likely to experience intense downpours, which could potentially lead to localized flooding and disruption.

Widespread Rain and Thunderstorm Warnings for 66 Districts

Beyond the “very heavy rain” alert, a broader warning has been issued for 66 districts, indicating the likelihood of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. This widespread activity will bring significant relief from the recent heat and humidity that had gripped the state. Districts falling under this warning include:

  • Sonbhadra
  • Mirzapur
  • Chandauli
  • Varanasi
  • Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi)
  • Jaunpur
  • Ghazipur
  • Azamgarh
  • Mau
  • Ballia
  • Deoria
  • Gorakhpur
  • Sant Kabir Nagar
  • Basti
  • Kushinagar
  • Maharajganj
  • Siddharthnagar
  • Gonda
  • Sitapur
  • Barabanki
  • Ambedkar Nagar
  • Baghpat
  • Meerut
  • Sambhal
  • Budaun
  • And many more across the state.

Residents in these areas should be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including strong winds, thunder, and lightning, which can pose risks.

Lucknow to Experience Significant Rainfall

After enduring several days of intense heat and oppressive humidity, the capital city, Lucknow, and its surrounding areas are also poised for substantial relief. Saturday afternoon witnessed the first signs of this change, with dark clouds bringing welcome showers accompanied by strong winds in various parts of the city. The IMD forecasts good rainfall for Lucknow and its vicinity over the next two to three days.

The recent dry spell in Lucknow, following an initial strong monsoon onset, had left residents feeling uncomfortable. This was primarily attributed to the monsoon trough line’s temporary shift. With its return, the city can expect a significant increase in rainfall, providing much-needed respite. The weather department has also issued a lightning warning for Lucknow and its surrounding areas during the predicted thunderstorms and rain over the next 24 hours.

As the monsoon gears up for an active phase across Uttar Pradesh, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The return of the monsoon trough line is a positive development for the agricultural sector and groundwater levels, but it also necessitates preparedness for potential challenges like localized flooding, traffic disruptions, and electrical outages due to lightning strikes.
