In a significant address to senior officials during the Rajbhasha Department’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the importance of Hindi as a unifying force for all Indian languages. Shah firmly stated that Hindi is not an adversary to any of the regional languages of India, but rather a companion to all of them. His statement came as a response to critics of Hindi and aimed to clear misconceptions surrounding the language.

Hindi as a Unifying Force for India

Amit Shah emphasized that Hindi serves as a tool for unity rather than division. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts by some groups to create division by using language as a means to fragment the country. However, despite these attempts, Shah assured that India’s languages would always act as a powerful tool for unity. He also categorically stated that Hindi is not the enemy of any Indian language and that Hindi and other regional languages should work together to enhance India’s cultural identity.

Shah’s remarks came after he observed how language was used in the past to divide the nation. While these efforts to break India through language failed, they had led to significant social and political challenges. Shah’s aim was to ensure that language becomes a binding force for India, strengthening the fabric of unity among its diverse regions and cultures.

No Place for Opposition to Any Language

Shah also sent a clear message to those opposing Hindi. He stated that no language should be opposed in India. In his view, it was essential for every Indian to take pride in their mother tongue. He further added that language, in its true sense, is not just a medium of communication but a representation of national pride. To rid ourselves of the mindset of colonial subjugation, one must first take pride in speaking their native language.

The Home Minister’s message was aimed at ensuring that every individual speaks, thinks, and expresses themselves in their mother tongue, something that signifies cultural freedom and a break from the colonial legacy. He pointed out that while there is no opposition to any foreign language, the promotion and glorification of one’s own language is of utmost importance for the country’s growth and identity.

Promoting Indian Languages in Education

Shah also made a significant call for education in regional languages. He pointed out that exams like JEE and NEET are being conducted in 13 languages, and about 95% of students take these exams in their native languages. In this context, he appealed to states to ensure that engineering and medical education can also be offered in local languages. Shah emphasized that this will allow students to better understand their subjects and give them the opportunity to excel without any language barriers.

He also expressed his desire to enhance the use of Indian languages in official work and pointed out that the Indian government will engage with states to ensure more widespread use of local languages in administration. Shah emphasized that this approach would strengthen the connection between the common people and the administration, making governance more accessible and relatable.

Language and National Identity

Shah also touched on the crucial link between language and national identity. He praised individuals like Rajlaxmi, who at the age of 82 is still actively teaching Hindi in Tamil Nadu. Shah highlighted that such efforts are crucial for promoting linguistic harmony and spreading the love for Hindi in different parts of the country. According to Shah, language should reflect the common man’s voice and should be in harmony with the people it serves.

He further stated that India’s administration should function in the language of its people, ensuring that government policies and services are accessible to everyone in their native languages. This, he believes, is vital for decolonizing the mindset of the country and moving towards a truly independent India where every individual feels connected to their heritage and culture.

Shah’s Call to Linguists and Language Scholars

Shah made an appeal to language scholars and experts across the country, urging them to work towards enriching and preserving Indian languages. His call was for the academic community and linguists to actively contribute to the growth and prosperity of languages, ensuring they remain vibrant and alive. He emphasized that the government would continue to support initiatives that promote language development.

In his speech, Shah acknowledged that foreign languages should not be opposed but added that promoting one’s own language is essential. He suggested that language should be a living, thriving entity, not just a means of communication, but a powerful tool for cultural preservation and national growth.

Strengthening Cultural Pride Through Language

One of the core themes of Shah’s address was the importance of language in maintaining India’s cultural pride. He urged that Indian languages should not only be preserved but also celebrated. By promoting the use of Hindi alongside regional languages, the unity in diversity mantra can be reinforced, and the cultural wealth of the nation can be protected.

Shah firmly believed that the promotion of Hindi and other Indian languages is a way to ensure that India’s cultural heritage remains strong and unbroken. He emphasized that Hindi is not a threat to regional languages; instead, it is a tool that can strengthen the cultural fabric of the nation.

In conclusion, Amit Shah’s address highlights a vision for India where language serves as a unifying factor rather than a divisive one. His call for a shared national pride in linguistic diversity aims to bridge gaps between different regions, cultures, and communities. Through language, the country can overcome historical divides and move towards a unified, inclusive future.

Shah’s speech makes it clear that while promoting Hindi as a national language, the importance of regional languages will never be undermined. All languages, according to him, should be treated with respect, and their role in uniting the country should be emphasized. The government’s efforts to celebrate linguistic diversity while promoting a unified national identity through language is a crucial step towards India’s future growth, stability, and unity.
