KKN Gurugram Desk | Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is back in cinemas with his latest release ‘Sitare Zameen Par’, a spiritual sequel to his 2007 cult hit Taare Zameen Par. While the film has opened to impressive box office numbers and largely positive audience reactions, it has also sparked a wave of online trolling and boycott calls — particularly on X (formerly Twitter).

The controversy stems not from the content of the film itself, but from a combination of Aamir Khan’s past public statements and his perceived silence on current national issues, especially the recent incident in Pahalgam, which has become a politically charged topic on social media.

Sitare Zameen Par: What the Film Is About

Released on June 20, 2025, Sitare Zameen Par is a sports-comedy-drama that focuses on a group of children with Down syndrome who rise above limitations through courage, community, and sportsmanship. Directed by RS Prasanna, the film explores themes of inclusion, self-belief, and neurodiversity in Indian society — making it a rare, emotion-driven story in a time when action-packed blockbusters dominate the charts.

With over ₹30 crore grossed in just two days, the film is tracking well at the box office and receiving praise from both audiences and critics alike for its sensitive portrayal of special needs children and inspirational storytelling.

 #BoycottSitareZameenPar Trends on X

Despite its emotional narrative and positive early reception, Sitare Zameen Par has become the center of a boycott trend on social media. Many users on X have accused Aamir Khan of hypocrisy and selective activism, pointing out his silence on the recent Pahalgam issue, where multiple national concerns have surfaced.

The hashtag #BoycottSitareZameenPar started trending late Friday, gaining momentum as users resurfaced Aamir Khan’s old interviews, questioning his stance on Indian socio-political matters. Some called him out for allegedly prioritizing film promotion over humanitarian issues, while others outright labeled the film “unnecessary.”

One user wrote: “Instead of making movies, Aamir Khan should feed starving children. Enough of the pseudo-sensitivity.”

Another commented: “He stays silent on Pahalgam, but expects people to watch his movie? Not this time.”

Why Is Aamir Khan Being Targeted Again?

This isn’t the first time Aamir Khan has faced backlash on social media. The actor has, in the past, been at the center of controversy due to statements on intolerance in India, which some sections of the public considered politically sensitive or offensive.

Even though Sitare Zameen Par itself does not carry any political undertones, Aamir’s public image has remained divisive, making his films frequent targets of social media outrage cycles.

Such boycott culture in Bollywood, especially driven through X and YouTube influencers, has seen major movements against stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and even Kareena Kapoor Khan in the past. Now, Aamir appears to be the latest entrant in this trend.

A Stellar Cast of Debutants Gains Praise

Putting controversy aside, one of the most appreciated aspects of Sitare Zameen Par is its ensemble cast of 10 young debut actors, most of whom are either new faces or emerging theatre talents. The cast includes:

  • Aarush Dutta

  • Gopi Krishna Verma

  • Samvit Desai

  • Vedant Sharma

  • Ayush Bhansali

  • Ashish Pendse

  • Rishi Shahani

  • Rishabh Jain

  • Naman Mishra

  • Simran Mangeshkar

These young actors, portraying children with Down syndrome and other learning differences, have received widespread appreciation for their authentic and heartfelt performances.

Industry Reactions: Salman and Shah Rukh Show Support

Despite the negativity online, many Bollywood celebrities have come out in support of Aamir Khan and his film. According to sources close to the production, both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have privately appreciated the movie and commended the courage to tell such an emotional and socially relevant story in today’s climate.

Film critics have also given Sitare Zameen Par generally positive reviews, especially praising its screenplay, music, and emotional connect with the audience.

Box Office vs. Backlash: Which Will Win?

It remains to be seen whether the online trolling will actually affect the film’s box office run. Initial numbers are strong, but the coming week will be crucial in determining whether the #BoycottSitareZameenPar trend impacts ticket sales in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where social sentiments often play a larger role in cinema consumption.

According to trade analyst estimates, the film is on track to cross ₹70–80 crore in its first week if current momentum continues.

A Deeper Question: Can Art Exist Without Politics in India Today?

The uproar surrounding Sitare Zameen Par brings forth a bigger debate — can an Indian celebrity release a film without it being politicized? In an era of rising polarization, even emotionally driven films with social messages are not spared from ideological filtering.

While the internet has democratized voices, it has also blurred the line between genuine accountability and performative outrage. Aamir Khan’s situation, like many others before him, exemplifies the fragile relationship between art, activism, and audience trust.

Sitare Zameen Par may have started as a touching story about children with Down syndrome, but it has inadvertently become a lightning rod for political and cultural discourse. For Aamir Khan, the film represents a return to emotionally engaging cinema — but also a reminder that in today’s India, every public move is a potential flashpoint.

Whether the film survives the boycott storm or succumbs to it will depend not just on screen content, but also on how social narratives evolve over the next few days.

For now, Sitare Zameen Par continues to pull in audiences who appreciate storytelling with heart — but with hashtags hovering over every scene.
