Bihar Pension Hike: Political Tension Escalates Ahead of Elections as Nitish Kumar Announces Pension Increase

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | As Bihar approaches its assembly elections, a new political controversy has erupted surrounding the increase in social security pensions for elderly, widows, and disabled individuals. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s decision to raise the pension from ₹400 to ₹1100 per month has sparked significant political debate. The opposition parties, particularly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), have been quick to criticize the move, with accusations of copying their own proposals. Meanwhile, Prashant Kishor, a key political strategist and leader of the Jan Suraj Party, has also voiced his concerns, claiming credit for the government’s actions and promising further increases if his party comes to power.

Bihar’s Pension Hike Amid Electoral Pressure

Bihar’s pension hike, especially in an election year, has led to intense political discourse. On June 21, 2025, Nitish Kumar’s government decided to increase the social security pension for senior citizens, widows, and disabled individuals from ₹400 to ₹1100 per month. This decision, while welcomed by beneficiaries, has been fiercely debated by political opponents.

Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the opposition and the leader of RJD, wasted no time in accusing Nitish Kumar of “copying” his party’s promises. Yadav pointed out that his party had already promised an increase in pensions to ₹1500 per month, well ahead of the ruling party’s announcement. Furthermore, he reminded the public that under the Mahi Behen scheme, women would receive ₹255 per month, making his party’s proposal more comprehensive and far-reaching. Yadav’s comments suggest that the ruling party’s actions are being driven by the need to emulate RJD’s policies in a bid to win votes during the upcoming elections.

Prashant Kishor’s Reaction to the Pension Hike

On the other hand, Prashant Kishor, who has been making waves with his Jan Suraj Party, expressed his views on the pension hike as well. Kishor took to social media and other platforms to claim that it was his party’s influence that pushed the Nitish government to increase the pension. Kishor stated that it was the pressure from Jan Suraj’s growing presence that led the government to take this step, signaling the effectiveness of his political movement.

In a public address, Prashant Kishor stated, “The decision to raise the pension from ₹400 to ₹1100 is the result of the growing impact of Jan Suraj. We promise that once our government comes to power, we will increase the pension to ₹2000 per month, starting from the Chhath festival.” This bold statement from Kishor adds fuel to the ongoing political war and clearly positions his party as a major challenger in the upcoming elections.

Political Battle Over Pension Promises

The controversy over the pension hike has exposed a deeper political rivalry between Nitish Kumar’s NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government and the opposition parties. Tejashwi Yadav, who has been vocal in his criticism of the ruling government, suggested that the Bihar government’s decision to increase the pension was a mere attempt to imitate his party’s vision for social welfare. The opposition has seized the opportunity to remind the public of their earlier promises and question the timing of the pension hike, suggesting that it was an electoral ploy designed to win favor just before the elections.

This political tussle also brings to light the larger issue of social security schemes and the role of such promises in electoral campaigns. As Bihar’s assembly elections are expected to be held in October-November 2025, the increase in pensions has become a crucial political talking point. For Nitish Kumar’s government, this move is seen as a “masterstroke” aimed at securing votes from the elderly, widows, and disabled individuals, who constitute a significant portion of the electorate.

Details of the Pension Increase and the Expected Impact

As per the new policy, the state government will now provide ₹1100 per month instead of the previous ₹400 for elderly citizens, widows, and disabled people. This increase in pension is expected to benefit over 1.09 crore people in Bihar who are currently enrolled in the social pension scheme. The raised amount will be deposited into the beneficiaries’ accounts starting from July 10, 2025.

This move comes at a time when Bihar’s political landscape is charged with election fever, and the timing of this pension hike could have significant implications on voter sentiment. By increasing the pension amount nearly threefold, Nitish Kumar’s government aims to secure the support of the marginalized sections of society, a critical demographic in the state’s political scenario.

Opposition’s Criticism: Is It a Copycat Move?

The opposition’s response to the pension hike has been sharply critical. Tejashwi Yadav’s accusations of “copying” his party’s proposal have been echoed by many of his followers. Yadav emphasized that the RJD had already promised a much higher pension amount of ₹1500 per month, whereas Nitish Kumar’s increase was a belated attempt to mirror RJD’s promise. This criticism is not just about the amount but also the political timing, with the opposition claiming that Nitish Kumar’s government is trying to score political points right before the elections.

However, Nitish Kumar’s supporters argue that the increase in pension is a reflection of the government’s commitment to social welfare and the wellbeing of the elderly, widows, and disabled people. For many, this policy is seen as a necessary step to address the financial struggles of these vulnerable groups, especially as inflation and economic challenges have made it difficult for them to make ends meet.

What’s Next: Pensions and Election Strategies

The decision to increase pensions is expected to have a significant impact on Bihar’s electoral scene. With the state elections approaching, the ruling party’s move is likely to resonate well with the electorate, especially among the senior citizens, widows, and differently-abled communities. The opposition parties, however, are likely to continue questioning the timing of this decision and accusing the government of using social welfare schemes for political gain.

For Prashant Kishor and his Jan Suraj Party, the promise to further increase pensions to ₹2000 per month, should they come to power, is a bold political gambit. His rhetoric not only challenges the existing political structures but also positions his party as a fresh alternative to both the ruling NDA and the opposition RJD.

The controversy surrounding the pension hike in Bihar has highlighted the role that social welfare policies play in state elections. With opposition parties accusing the Nitish Kumar-led government of copying their promises and Prashant Kishor promising further increases, the issue of pensions has become a key point of political contention. As Bihar heads toward its elections, the increase in pensions will likely be a central issue, and how it influences voters will remain to be seen.

This political battle over pensions underscores the growing importance of social security schemes in the electoral strategies of parties. Whether the electorate sees this as a genuine effort by the government to address the needs of vulnerable communities or as a mere election stunt remains a critical question in the run-up to the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections.
