KKN Gurugram Desk | The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds across the region. Several areas in the capital, including Feroz Shah Road, experienced falling trees and traffic disruptions as intense rainfall hit the city.

In a significant incident, a large tree was uprooted on Feroz Shah Road due to powerful gusts accompanying the rainfall, highlighting the risk posed by unstable weather conditions during the early monsoon onset.

Thunderstorm and Rain Lash Delhi

On Saturday night and into Sunday morning, residents of Delhi-NCR witnessed lightning, gusty winds, and a sudden downpour that caused waterlogging and traffic congestion in multiple parts of the city. The IMD had already predicted this shift in weather, warning citizens of possible damage due to winds reaching 50 km/h.

The combination of lightning strikeshailstorms, and dust storms created hazardous conditions, especially during commuting hours. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors during periods of severe weather and to avoid sheltering under trees or near loose structures.

 IMD Forecast: Wind Speeds to Reach 40–50 km/h in Coming Days

According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi will experience wind speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts possibly reaching up to 50 km/h during thunderstorms over the next 48 hours. These conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, offering temporary relief from the intense summer heat.

Forecast at a Glance:

  • June 16–20: Light to moderate rainfall expected across Delhi-NCR

  • Thunderstorms and lightning likely in several areas

  • Maximum temperatures expected between 36°C and 39°C

  • Minimum temperatures may range from 25°C to 27°C

  • Heavy gusts and isolated hailstorms possible during peak activity

 Risk of Property Damage and Power Disruptions

The IMD has warned that due to strong winds, temporary structurestrees, and power lines are at risk. Residents may face intermittent power outagesfalling debris, and blocked roads in low-lying or heavily treed areas.

The advisory suggests:

  • Avoiding travel during thunderstorm hours

  • Steering clear of tall trees and weakly constructed shelters

  • Charging mobile devices in advance

  • Not touching metal poles or electric wires during lightning

 Impact on Daily Life: Commuters and Residents Affected

In areas like Connaught PlaceFeroz Shah Road, and parts of South Delhi, waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported early Sunday. Several commuters faced long delays, especially as trees blocked key roads and intersections.

Local authorities, including the Delhi Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation, have been deployed to clear roads, divert traffic, and remove fallen debris. Emergency services remain on high alert for weather-related incidents.

 Western Disturbance Triggers Rainfall Over North India

The current spell of rain and storm is attributed to a new western disturbance, which became active over Northwest India from Saturday onwards. This disturbance, combined with moisture-laden easterly winds, has intensified cloud formation over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh.

This climatic shift is expected to keep temperatures lower over the next few days while raising humidity levels.

 Weeklong Outlook: Light Showers to Continue in Delhi-NCR

The IMD has extended its rain forecast, predicting scattered rainfall across Delhi-NCR until June 20. While no major flooding is anticipated, localized downpours may cause brief urban flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems.

The weather office has stated:

“Intermittent rainfall activity is expected for the next 5–6 days. Thunderstorm activity may peak during the evenings. Citizens should remain cautious and follow official updates.”

 Relief From Heatwave Conditions

The rainy weather has come as a welcome relief from the oppressive summer heat that gripped Delhi last week, when temperatures had soared past 41°C. With the arrival of clouds and moisture, the mercury has dipped, and conditions are expected to remain cooler this week.

Temperature Projections:

  • June 16–20 (Max Temp): 36°C – 39°C

  • June 16–20 (Min Temp): 25°C – 27°C

  • Relative Humidity: Expected to stay above 70% during peak rain hours

 Government Advisory Issued for Public Safety

In light of the ongoing rain and thunderstorm activity, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and IMD have released joint advisories urging people to:

  • Stay indoors during heavy winds or lightning

  • Refrain from parking vehicles under trees

  • Keep emergency contact numbers handy

  • Avoid stepping into waterlogged areas due to electrical hazards

 NCR Weather: Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad Also on Alert

Weather conditions in adjoining NCR cities such as Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad mirror those in Delhi. Several localities in these regions have reported waterlogging, low visibility, and traffic issues due to sudden showers.

The IMD regional center has indicated that similar weather activity will persist across entire NCR till at least June 20, as monsoon conditions gradually develop across northern India.

As the Delhi-NCR region braces for more rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, residents are advised to remain prepared and cautious. The weather not only brings temporary relief from heat but also potential hazards like falling trees, power failures, and transportation delays.

This week’s weather advisory from the IMD should be followed closely, especially by commuters, local businesses, and emergency responders. The shift in climate patterns underscores the importance of urban resilience planning as India transitions into its monsoon phase.
