Delhi Monsoon Likely to Arrive by June 22–23

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | After days of scorching heat and high humidity, relief may finally be on the horizon for Delhi-NCR. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the monsoon may reach Delhi between June 22 and 23, offering a much-needed break from the relentless summer heat.

According to IMD officials, the southwest monsoon is currently progressing rapidly and is expected to cover major parts of northwest India ahead of its normal schedule, which typically begins around June 27 for the national capital.

Monsoon to Advance Faster This Year: IMD

The IMD stated in its latest bulletin that after a slow start in early June, the monsoon has gained momentum. It is now expected to reach central and eastern India completely by June 18, and then gradually progress over northwestern India, including Delhi, between June 19 and June 25.

“Monsoon is likely to arrive in Delhi earlier than usual, most probably between June 22 and 23,” an IMD official said.

The early arrival of monsoon is expected to bring down soaring temperatures and provide widespread rainfall across several north Indian states including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi Weather: Heat Intensity Has Slightly Reduced, Says IMD

While residents of Delhi have been grappling with extreme heat conditions for the past five days, a slight dip in temperature and patchy showers on Friday offered some comfort.

  • The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung Observatory on Friday was 41.2°C, which was still 1.3°C above normal, but 2.7°C lower than Thursday’s 43.9°C.

  • The minimum temperature stood at 31°C, 3°C higher than average, making Thursday night the hottest night of the season.

  • Humidity levels fluctuated between 51% and 69% throughout the day.

Despite the marginal temperature drop, Delhi’s “feels-like” temperature at 5 PM on Friday reached 50.3°C, according to IMD data. On Thursday at the same time, the feels-like temperature was a staggering 54.4°C.

Friday Showed Signs of Weather Shift

While Friday began with intense sunlight, by afternoon, light drizzles and gusty winds were observed in parts of Delhi and nearby areas like Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad.

  • Wind speed reached around 11.1 km/h

  • Humidity levels settled at 56% by evening

  • Residents reported a noticeable drop in heat intensity

Though minor, these changes indicate the onset of atmospheric shifts leading to monsoon activity.

What’s Causing the Change in Weather?

Meteorologists attribute the current weather transition to multiple systems influencing the region:

  1. A cyclonic circulation forming over parts of Rajasthan

  2. A low-pressure zone developing due to a western disturbance

These systems are collectively bringing cloud activity, intermittent rainfall, and a gradual decrease in temperature. As a result, Delhi-NCR is expected to experience partly cloudy skies, dust storms, and light to moderate showers over the next three to four days.

Expected Drop in Temperature and Rainfall Forecast

According to IMD, due to the impact of pre-monsoon activity:

  • Daytime temperatures may drop by 2–3°C over the weekend

  • Residents can expect overcast skies and periodic light showers

  • Dust-laden winds and humidity fluctuations will continue

The combination of cooler winds and rain will offer significant relief to those suffering from heat-induced health issues such as dehydration, fatigue, and heatstroke.

Why Was Delhi So Hot This June?

This year, northwest and central India have witnessed unusually high temperatures since early June, primarily due to a shortfall in rainfall. The delay in monsoon winds allowed the heatwave to persist, especially across:

  • Delhi

  • Rajasthan

  • Haryana

  • Uttar Pradesh

  • Madhya Pradesh

From June 8 to 13, IMD marked most of north and central India under “red” or “orange” heatwave alerts.

“The lack of early rain and stagnant hot air masses significantly pushed daytime temperatures above 45°C in many cities,” said an IMD scientist.

 Delhi Monsoon Arrival Timeline (Expected)

  • June 14–18: Light rainfall, overcast skies, occasional dust storms

  • June 18–21: Increasing moisture levels, lower day temperatures

  • June 22–23: Monsoon onset in Delhi, with possible widespread rainfall

  • June 24–30: Full coverage across Delhi-NCR and neighboring regions

This early arrival, almost 4–5 days ahead of normal, is attributed to favorable wind patterns and moisture flow from the Arabian Sea.

Health & Safety Advisory for Delhi Residents

Until full monsoon conditions set in, IMD and Delhi Health Department recommend the following:

  • Avoid outdoor activity between 12 PM and 4 PM

  • Stay hydrated and consume light, water-rich foods

  • Use umbrellas or hats to reduce sun exposure

  • Monitor weather updates daily, especially for dust storms and rain

After battling relentless heat, high humidity, and record-setting temperatures, Delhi is finally bracing for monsoon relief. With the monsoon likely to arrive by June 22–23, the region can expect cooler days, cleaner air, and agricultural benefits.
