Uttar Pradesh Weather Update

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The scorching heatwave that has gripped most parts of Uttar Pradesh over the past few weeks may finally see a turning point. According to the latest weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), relief from intense heat is likely to begin from June 15, especially in eastern and western regions of the state.

The IMD bulletin issued on Thursday predicts light rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across various districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, potentially marking the arrival of pre-monsoon activity. People across several districts including Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Ballia, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, and Basti are expected to get much-needed relief from the sweltering conditions.

Heatwave to Continue Until June 14

As of now, most parts of Western UP and the Bundelkhand region are under the grip of extremely high temperatures, with daytime mercury hovering above 44°C in some areas. The IMD has confirmed that this heatwave will persist at least until June 14, and has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM.

Cities like Jhansi, Banda, Kanpur, and Agra are among the hottest in the state right now, with no immediate relief expected in these regions until mid-June.

Rain and Storms Expected From June 15

The major weather shift is expected to begin on June 15, when cloud formations and moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal may trigger rainfall and thunderstorm activity in parts of the state.

According to IMD’s regional weather update:

  • Light to moderate showers may occur in both Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh

  • Thunderstorms and gusty winds may reach speeds of up to 50 km/h

  • Some areas may also experience frequent lightning and thunderclaps

Districts Likely to Receive Rainfall from June 15

The following districts in Purvanchal (Eastern UP) are likely to experience light rain, thunderstorm, and gusty winds starting from Saturday, June 15:

  • Gorakhpur

  • Ballia

  • Azamgarh

  • Deoria

  • Siddharthnagar

  • Basti

  • Mau

  • Kushinagar

  • Jaunpur

  • Ghazipur

  • Sant Kabir Nagar

These districts are under yellow alert for pre-monsoon activity, and residents are advised to stay indoors during stormy conditions and avoid areas prone to waterlogging or tree falls.

Impact of Incoming Rainfall on Temperature

With the arrival of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity, maximum daytime temperatures are expected to drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in the affected districts. Night temperatures will also become more comfortable, especially in rural areas where humidity has been intense.

This change in weather is likely to bring temporary but noticeable relief to farmers, school children, daily wage workers, and vulnerable populations across UP.

Current Weather Scenario in Uttar Pradesh

As of June 13, the current temperature map of Uttar Pradesh indicates:

  • Jhansi, Banda, Kanpur, Prayagraj: Above 44°C

  • Lucknow, Varanasi, Bareilly: Between 40°C to 42°C

  • Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Basti: Hovering around 39°C

Humidity levels in Eastern UP are also high, making the heat index feel closer to 45–47°C, causing severe discomfort, dehydration risks, and health concerns.

Health Advisory: IMD and UP Health Department Warn Public

Due to persistent high temperatures and humidity, the IMD and the UP Health Department have jointly issued an advisory for all residents:

  • Stay hydrated – Drink at least 3-4 litres of water daily

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak sun hours

  • Use light cotton clothing

  • Keep senior citizens, children, and pets indoors

  • Be alert to signs of heatstroke, dehydration, or dizziness

Hospitals across districts are also asked to stay prepared for emergency heatwave cases.

What It Means for Farmers in Eastern UP

The anticipated rainfall from June 15 could bring early sowing opportunities for farmers, especially those preparing for Kharif crops like paddy, maize, and pulses. However, agriculture experts warn that isolated rain showers may not be enough to start full-scale sowing, and farmers are advised to wait for consistent monsoon rains expected later this month.

According to long-range forecasts, the southwest monsoon is likely to hit Eastern Uttar Pradesh between June 20 and June 25, depending on wind patterns and low-pressure formations over the Bay of Bengal. The pre-monsoon showers from June 15 are seen as an early signal of monsoon onset in this region.

Meteorologists suggest keeping an eye on daily bulletins from the IMD and regional weather centers for accurate rain updates and monsoon movement.
