Bihar Weather Update: Temperature May Rise by 4°C

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The heatwave in Bihar is far from over. As per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), residents of Bihar should brace themselves for even more extreme weather conditions in the coming days. The state is likely to witness a further increase of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in both maximum and minimum temperatures, accompanied by high humidity levels, exacerbating the discomfort for citizens across districts.

Steady Rise in Temperature Across the State

On Saturday, the sun beat down relentlessly on most parts of Bihar, pushing the mercury up by nearly 5°C in some areas. According to meteorological observations, maximum temperatures surged dramatically, while minimum temperatures saw a slight drop. This weather anomaly combined with high humidity levels made for a harsh, almost suffocating atmosphere.

  • Maximum temperature rise: Up to 5°C

  • Minimum temperature variation: Drop of around 2.9°C

  • Humidity level: Reached up to 66% in certain areas

Such conditions have led to an increased risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses, especially among children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Bihar’s Hottest and Coolest Cities on Saturday

Temperature data from Saturday highlighted stark contrasts across different districts in the state:

  • Hottest city: Dehri recorded a searing 40°C

  • Coolest location: Valmikinagar with a minimum temperature of 22.7°C

Despite being a cooler zone, Valmikinagar is also witnessing rising temperatures with each passing day. Meanwhile, regions like Gaya, Aurangabad, and Buxar are also showing alarming spikes in temperature trends.

High Humidity Making Heat Unbearable

The heat is not the only concern. Humidity, an often overlooked factor, is playing a significant role in amplifying the heat discomfort index.

  • In many places, humidity levels crossed 50%, with some localities touching 66%.

  • This “humid heat” makes it feel several degrees hotter than what the thermometer shows.

Meteorologists explain that such high humidity limits the body’s ability to cool down through sweating, resulting in increased internal heat retention and an elevated risk of heat exhaustion.

Patna Weather Forecast: Mercury to Climb Further

The state capital Patna is expected to experience clear skies on Sunday, which means uninterrupted sunshine and higher daytime temperatures.

Key Stats for Patna on Saturday:

  • Maximum Temperature: 38.5°C

  • Minimum Temperature: 27.3°C

  • Increase in Max Temp: +3.2°C

  • Increase in Min Temp: +0.9°C

  • Humidity: 39%

With clear skies forecasted, Sunday’s temperatures are expected to rise even further, potentially crossing 39°C. Authorities are advising citizens to take extra precautions, especially during peak sunlight hours (12 noon to 4 PM).

Weather Predictions for the Next 48 Hours in Bihar

According to the latest advisory issued by the IMD:

  • Temperature Spike: Both maximum and minimum temperatures may rise by 2–4°C.

  • Humidity: Expected to remain above 50%, intensifying the heat.

  • Heat Index: Could feel like 45°C or more, depending on region-specific humidity levels.

This warning applies across multiple districts, including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, and Darbhanga.

Health Advisory for Bihar Residents

The State Health Department, in coordination with local municipal bodies, has issued the following heatwave guidelines:

DOs:

  • Stay hydrated – drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily

  • Use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses when stepping out

  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothes

  • Stay indoors during peak heat hours (12 PM to 4 PM)

DON’Ts:

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during the daytime

  • Don’t consume alcohol or caffeinated drinks in excess

  • Don’t leave children or pets inside parked vehicles

  • Avoid eating stale or uncovered food

Local hospitals have also been directed to keep emergency services on high alert for potential heatstroke and dehydration cases.

How Is the Rural Population Coping?

Villages in central and southern Bihar, where access to electricity and water is inconsistent, are facing even harsher challenges. Agricultural laborers, especially, are being forced to adjust work hours to early mornings or late evenings to escape the brutal heat.

Many farmers report crop stress due to excessive heat and the absence of rainfall, which could negatively impact paddy transplantation scheduled for later this month.

Urban Challenges Amid Heatwave

In cities like Patna and Gaya:

  • Power consumption has surged, increasing the likelihood of power cuts.

  • Water demand has peaked, with many localities reporting reduced municipal water supply.

  • Roadside vendors and delivery workers are among the most affected, struggling to earn under dangerous conditions.

Climate Experts Weigh In

Climate scientists from Patna University and the Centre for Environmental Studies point out that Bihar is experiencing an early and extended heatwave season due to global climate change and urban heat island effects.

They warn that:

  • These high temperatures may last until the arrival of monsoon, expected by late June.

  • The intensity of heatwaves is increasing by the year, and cities like Patna need urgent urban cooling strategies like tree plantation, green roofs, and reflective infrastructure.

What to Expect Next Week

Based on forecast models:

  • No rainfall is expected over the next 5-6 days.

  • Temperatures will likely remain above normal across Bihar.

  • Winds will stay light, with little respite from heat through natural air circulation.

IMD may issue fresh advisories if the heat conditions worsen further.

As Bihar continues to reel under an intense heatwave, residents must prepare for even hotter days ahead. With no immediate sign of rainfall and temperature projected to rise by up to 4°Cawareness and precautions are crucial. State authorities are actively monitoring the situation, but community participation in heat safety practices will be key to minimizing health risks and ensuring public safety.
