COVID-19 Update: Active Cases in India Cross 4,000

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | As of June 3, 2025, India has reported a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, with active cases surpassing the 4,000 mark. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed a total of 4,026 active COVID-19 cases nationwide, an increase from the previous day’s count of 3,961. Additionally, five new fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since January 2025 to 37.

Statewise Breakdown of Active COVID-19 Cases

The distribution of active cases across various states is as follows:

  • Kerala1,416 active cases

  • Maharashtra494 active cases

  • Gujarat397 active cases

  • Delhi393 active cases

  • West Bengal372 active cases

  • Karnataka311 active cases

  • Tamil Nadu215 active cases

  • Other StatesRemaining states report fewer cases, with some having single-digit active cases.

Recent Fatalities and Vulnerable Populations

The recent deaths have been reported in Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Among the deceased, most were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and pneumonia. For instance, an 80-year-old male from Kerala with severe pneumonia and a 73-year-old woman in Maharashtra with diabetes and hypertension succumbed to the virus.

Emergence of New Omicron Sub-Variants

Health experts have identified the presence of new Omicron sub-variants—LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1—through genome sequencing. These variants are more transmissible but have not shown increased severity compared to earlier strains. The World Health Organization has classified these as “Variants Under Monitoring,” indicating that while they are being observed, they do not pose a significant global threat at this time.

Government Response and Public Advisory

In light of the rising cases, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has urged the public to remain vigilant. While the majority of infections are mild and manageable at home, individuals are advised to:

  • Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.

  • Practice regular hand hygiene.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk zones.

  • Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms worsen.

State governments are also enhancing surveillance and preparedness, including setting up specialized wards and ICUs in anticipation of potential surges.

Monitoring and Surveillance Measures

To better understand and control the spread of the virus, health authorities are implementing enhanced wastewater-based epidemiological surveillance and genome sequencing. These measures aim to detect outbreaks and evaluate risks more swiftly, enabling a proactive response to the evolving health threat.

While the current surge in COVID-19 cases is concerning, health experts maintain that the situation remains under control. The increase in cases is primarily attributed to the emergence of new Omicron sub-variants, which are more transmissible but less severe. Continued vigilance, adherence to health guidelines, and timely medical intervention are essential to manage and mitigate the impact of this wave.
