KKN Gurugram Desk | A potentially catastrophic fire was averted on the Kolkata Express (Train No. 13152) when flames erupted from the wheels of the S-1 coach due to brake binding near Tanakuppa station on the Gaya-Koderma rail section. Prompt action by railway staff ensured the fire was extinguished swiftly, preventing any injuries or significant damage.

Incident Overview

On the evening of June 1, passengers aboard the Kolkata Express noticed flames emanating from the wheels of the S-1 sleeper coach. The fire was attributed to brake binding, a condition where the train’s brake system fails to release properly, causing excessive friction and heat. Alert passengers quickly informed the train staff, leading to an immediate halt at Tanakuppa station.

During the emergency stop, many passengers, fearing for their safety, disembarked with their belongings. Railway personnel acted promptly, using fire extinguishers to douse the flames. The train remained stationary for approximately 30 minutes before resuming its journey after ensuring all safety protocols were met.

Train Details

The Kolkata Express operates daily between Jammu Tawi and Kolkata Chitpur, covering a distance of approximately 1,981 kilometers over 43 hours. The train comprises various classes, including Second AC (2A), Third AC (3A), Sleeper (SL), and General compartments. The S-1 coach, where the incident occurred, is one of the sleeper class coaches situated towards the rear of the train.

Safety Measures and Response

The swift response by the train crew and the alertness of passengers were instrumental in preventing a disaster. Railway officials have emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of braking systems to prevent such incidents. An inquiry has been initiated to investigate the exact cause of the brake malfunction.

Passengers praised the crew’s professionalism and the effective communication during the emergency. One traveler remarked, “The staff handled the situation calmly and efficiently, ensuring our safety.”

Preventive Measures

In light of this incident, railway authorities are expected to reinforce maintenance protocols and conduct thorough inspections of braking systems across the fleet. Training programs for staff on emergency response and fire safety are also likely to be intensified to enhance preparedness for such situations.

The incident on the Kolkata Express serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vigilant maintenance and prompt emergency response in railway operations. Thanks to the quick actions of both passengers and crew, a potentially tragic event was successfully averted.
