KKN Gurugram Desk | The residents of Patna woke up to another cloudy Sunday morning, bringing temporary relief from the scorching heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city will remain under the influence of thunderstorm and rain activity, continuing the weather pattern observed over the past few days. On Saturday, Patna recorded 0.4 mm of rainfall, accompanied by persistent cloud cover which led to a drop of 3.8°C in maximum temperature.

However, the humidity levels hovered around 70%, making the weather feel warmer than it was. Interestingly, the minimum temperature in Patna rose by 0.9°C, despite overcast skies.

Strong Winds Expected: IMD Warns of Gusts up to 60 Km/h

The IMD has issued a weather alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds ranging between 40 to 60 kilometers per hour in various parts of Bihar on Sunday. The alert covers several districts including Patna, Ara (Arrah), and Buxar, where early morning cloud formations signaled incoming weather activity.

This atmospheric disturbance is expected to bring short bursts of rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning, potentially affecting daily life and causing travel disruptions. The IMD advises residents to stay indoors during severe weather conditions and avoid sheltering under trees or weak structures.

Heavy Rainfall Alert in Eastern Bihar: Katihar, Banka, Bhagalpur on Watch

In a significant development, the IMD has flagged Katihar, Banka, and Bhagalpur as potential zones for heavy rainfall. The warning is in effect for isolated locations in these districts where rainfall intensity may exceed the average threshold, increasing the likelihood of localized flooding and waterlogging.

Residents are urged to take precautions and local authorities have been asked to remain on alert to respond to any emergency situations. The IMD has also indicated that adjacent districts in eastern, north-central, and south-central Bihar may experience light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

24 Districts Witness Rainfall: Raghunathpur in Siwan Receives Highest Precipitation

On Saturday, weather activity was widespread across 24 districts in Bihar, with varying levels of rainfall recorded. Among them, Raghunathpur in Siwan district stood out with an exceptional 175.6 mm of rainfall, the highest in the state for the day.

Other districts, including Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Nalanda, experienced moderate rainfall, contributing to a notable dip in both maximum and minimum temperatures across the state. This shift brings momentary relief to the public but also introduces risks such as water accumulation and disrupted local transportation.

District-Wise Forecast: Which Areas Are Most Affected?

High Alert Zones for Sunday (May 25, 2025):

  • Katihar – Heavy rain, thunderstorm, high wind speeds

  • Banka – Likely to see intense rainfall

  • Bhagalpur – Rain and lightning expected

Moderate Risk Areas:

  • Patna

  • Ara (Arrah)

  • Buxar

  • Gaya

  • Muzaffarpur

These areas may experience intermittent showers, strong winds, and lightning activity throughout the day and evening.

Temperature Trends: Drop in Maximums, Slight Rise in Minimums

The fluctuating weather has resulted in significant temperature variation across Bihar. Due to the cloud cover and rainfall, most districts witnessed a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures, while minimum temperatures have either stabilized or slightly increased, due to increased humidity.

Temperature Snapshot:

  • Patna Max Temp: Down by 3.8°C from seasonal average

  • Patna Min Temp: Up by 0.9°C

  • Humidity: Steady at around 70%

This unusual temperature pattern suggests a shift in the pre-monsoon behavior, indicating the advancing Southwest Monsoon system over the region.

Monsoon 2025 Update: Early Signs and Rainfall Predictions

According to long-term forecasts by the IMD, Bihar is expected to receive the monsoon rains by June 15, slightly earlier than the historical average. Moreover, above-normal rainfall is anticipated across the state, potentially benefiting agricultural operations but also raising concerns about flooding and urban drainage.

Farmers and local authorities are being advised to prepare early for the kharif sowing season, aligning crop strategies with the rainfall patterns forecasted by meteorological agencies.

Precautionary Measures Advised by Authorities

In light of the weather developments, the Disaster Management Department has issued a set of guidelines to ensure public safety. Citizens, especially those in vulnerable rural and low-lying areas, are being encouraged to follow safety protocols during thunderstorms and high winds.

Do’s and Don’ts During Thunderstorms:

  • Do not take shelter under trees or power poles

  • Avoid open fields and water bodies during lightning

  • Stay indoors, preferably away from windows

  • Charge essential electronic devices in advance

  • Stay tuned to local radio or mobile alerts for updates

Transportation and Daily Life Disruptions Likely

The impact of these weather conditions may extend to public transportation, school operations, and marketplace activity, particularly in districts under heavy rain warning. Local municipalities are advised to deploy emergency services, clean drains, and monitor traffic congestion.

Farmers and commuters are advised to plan accordingly, considering the short-term disruptions expected from storm activity and rain.

What to Expect Next: 48-Hour Outlook for Bihar

Meteorological projections for the next 48 hours indicate continued instability in the regional weather pattern. The presence of a low-pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal, coupled with localized heat and moisture dynamics over the Indo-Gangetic plains, is creating favorable conditions for thunderstorms and rain.

The IMD’s extended outlook also hints at isolated hailstorm activity in parts of North Bihar, although confirmation will depend on real-time satellite observations.

Bihar is currently under the grip of pre-monsoon weather activity, which is marked by intermittent rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The IMD’s alerts should be taken seriously, especially in districts like Katihar, Banka, Bhagalpur, and Patna.

While these weather patterns bring temporary relief from heat, they also demand heightened awareness and preparedness from citizens and civic bodies alike. Stay connected with official weather bulletins, follow advisories, and take the necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize disruption during this volatile season.
