PM Awas Yojana: Eligibility Criteria and Application Process Explained

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at providing affordable housing to low-income groups, particularly the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Under this scheme, the government offers financial assistance for the construction and purchase of houses, both in rural and urban areas.

If you’re looking to apply for the PM Awas Yojana, it’s important to first understand the eligibility criteria. Whether you’re in an urban or rural area, the PMAY eligibility requirements vary. In this article, we’ll guide you through the application process and help you understand the qualifications required to benefit from this housing assistance program.

What is the PM Awas Yojana (PMAY)?

The PM Awas Yojana is designed to help economically disadvantaged individuals and families own a permanent home. The government aims to build 1.2 crore houses by the end of 2022 under this initiative, with a focus on affordable housing for all. PMAY is divided into two main components: the Urban Housing Scheme and the Rural Housing Scheme, each targeting different groups of people based on their living conditions.

Who Can Apply for PM Awas Yojana?

The scheme provides financial assistance for both urban and rural applicants. The government aims to support people who do not yet have a permanent home, ensuring that they can get financial support for constructing or purchasing one.

However, not everyone can apply for this scheme. There are certain eligibility criteria that applicants must meet to benefit from the scheme. These criteria are based on factors such as incomelocation, and previous housing ownership.

Eligibility for PM Awas Yojana: Rural Areas

For applicants in rural areas, the PMAY scheme aims to benefit individuals and families who are living in substandard housing conditions. The government focuses on building houses for those who are currently residing in kuchha houses (temporary structures) or are homeless.

Here are the eligibility requirements for the rural population under the PM Awas Yojana:

  1. Income Group: Applicants must belong to the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections)LIG (Lower Income Group), or MIG (Middle Income Group) category.

  2. No Existing Permanent House: The applicant must not own any pucca house (permanent home) anywhere in India.

  3. Resident Status: The applicant must be a permanent resident of the area where they are applying for the housing scheme.

  4. Age Requirement: The applicant should be an adult above 18 years of age.

  5. Priority Groups: Priority will be given to women, people from SC/ST categories, and differently-abled persons.

In rural areas, the houses will be built with the help of the Government of India’s financial assistance, which includes an interest subsidy on loans.

Eligibility for PM Awas Yojana: Urban Areas

For urban applicants, the PMAY scheme is targeted at those living in slums or poor housing conditions in cities and towns. The focus is on providing affordable housing for low-income groups in urban areas where space is limited, and the cost of land and housing is high.

Here’s the eligibility criteria for urban applicants under PMAY:

  1. Income Group: Similar to rural areas, urban applicants must belong to the EWSLIG, or MIG categories. However, the income limits for these categories are different in urban areas:

    • EWS (Economically Weaker Sections): Annual income up to ₹3 lakh

    • LIG (Lower Income Group): Annual income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh

    • MIG (Middle Income Group): Annual income between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh

  2. No Existing Pucca House: The applicant must not own a permanent home (pucca house) in any part of the country. This is the key criterion that determines eligibility for both urban and rural applicants.

  3. Age Requirement: The applicant must be at least 18 years old.

  4. Priority to Women: As with rural areas, women applicants will be given priority under the PMAY Urban Scheme. The government encourages women empowerment by making women the primary applicants for the scheme.

  5. Must Live in the Designated Area: The applicant must be living in the area (either in a slum or an underdeveloped region) where they are applying for housing assistance.
