Massive Fire Near Hyderabad’s Charminar Kills 17, Including Children; PM Modi Expresses Grief

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | In one of the most tragic fire incidents in recent years, a major blaze broke out early Saturday morning near the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad, claiming the lives of at least 17 people and injuring over 10 others. The fire originated in a mixed-use building located in the densely populated Gulzar Houz area, which houses both commercial shops and residential apartments. Preliminary reports indicate a short circuit as the likely cause of the incident.

Fire in Hyderabad’s Gulzar Houz: Overview

The fire started around 5:30 AM on Saturday, May 18, when most residents were still asleep. It reportedly began in a pearl shop on the ground floor and quickly spread through the entire structure, filling it with thick smoke that led to suffocation-related fatalities. According to fire officials, the structure lacked adequate ventilation and emergency escape routes.

This marks the second major fire incident in Hyderabad within just two days. On Thursday, a multi-story building in the Siddi Amber Bazaar area had also caught fire, though with no reported casualties.

Casualties and Injuries

Among the 17 deceased, several were children and members of the same family who lived above the pearl shop. Most of the deaths were reportedly caused by asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

Over 10 injured individuals were rushed to DRDO HospitalOsmania General Hospital, and a private hospital. Medical staff confirmed that some victims are in critical condition and are being monitored closely.

Emergency Response and Firefighting Operations

As soon as the fire department received the alert, 11 fire tenders from stations including Langar Houz, Moghalpura, Gowliguda, Rajendra Nagar, Gandhi Outpost, and Salarjung Museum were deployed.

Additional rescue equipment included:

  • 2 Rescue Tenders

  • 1 Bronto Sky Lift for aerial evacuation

  • 3 Water Tenders

  • 1 Firefighting Robot for enhanced ground control in tight spaces

Despite the efforts, fire officials admitted that the narrow lanes around Charminar severely delayed access, complicating the rescue operation. This recurring urban planning issue is now under renewed scrutiny.

Probable Cause: Suspected Electrical Short Circuit

According to initial assessments by the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department, the fire appears to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. An investigation has been launched to confirm the exact cause and determine whether safety protocols and electrical standards were followed.

Authorities are also checking if the building had the mandatory fire safety clearance and functional firefighting systems, such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and alarm systems — many of which appear to have been absent or non-functional.

Prime Minister and Political Leaders React

Keyword Focus: PM Modi Hyderabad fire reaction, Telangana BJP response, government aid fire victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. In a statement shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the fire tragedy in Hyderabad, Telangana. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance of:

  • 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased

  • 50,000 each for the injured

Union Minister and Telangana BJP President G. Kishan Reddy visited the incident site. He confirmed that the fire began in a pearl shop, above which the owner’s residence was located. Reddy stressed the need for stronger coordination between municipal, electrical, and fire safety departments, especially as Hyderabad rapidly urbanizes.

“I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but in a fast-developing city like Hyderabad, our systems need to be robust. The police, fire, municipal, and power departments must be strengthened accordingly.”

Public Safety and Urban Planning Concerns

Keyword Focus: fire safety Hyderabad, building code violations, urban fire risks, Hyderabad fire regulations

The fire has reignited debate around fire safety regulations in high-density areas like Old Hyderabad, where narrow alleys and overcrowded buildings are common.

Local residents and activists have long been demanding:

  • Regular building safety audits

  • Mandatory installation of smoke alarms and sprinkler systems

  • Proper emergency exits

  • Evacuation drills in commercial-cum-residential buildings

Many observers point out that illegal constructions, unregulated power connections, and overburdened infrastructure in the Old City make it particularly vulnerable to disasters.

Urban development experts argue that Hyderabad’s heritage zones, such as the Charminar area, need special regulatory frameworks balancing safety, conservation, and modernization.

Eyewitness Accounts

Several eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as smoke engulfed the building and people screamed for help. Locals attempted to rescue residents before the fire brigade arrived, using ladders and water hoses.

A nearby shopkeeper told KKNLive:

“We saw thick smoke and people shouting from windows. Some jumped down to escape the flames. It was terrifying.”

One resident added:

“The fire spread too quickly. By the time we realized what was happening, it was already too late for many.”

Relief Measures and Administrative Response

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Police have launched relief measures for the affected families, including temporary shelter, psychological counseling, and assistance with last rites.

Officials from Telangana State Electricity BoardMunicipal Administration, and Fire Services are working on compiling a comprehensive report, expected to be submitted within a week.

The state government has assured that:

  • All survivors will receive medical care at no cost.

  • compensation package will be finalized once identities and family details are verified.

  • Accountability will be fixed for any violations or lapses in safety measures.

Second Fire in 2 Days: A Disturbing Pattern

Just two days before the Charminar incident, a massive fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Siddi Amber Bazaar, another commercial hub in Hyderabad. Though no casualties were reported in that incident, it served as a warning sign that was unfortunately not enough to prevent Saturday’s disaster.

With two major fires in as many days, questions are being raised about Hyderabad’s overall preparedness for handling urban fire emergencies.

Call for Systemic Reforms

As Hyderabad continues to expand rapidly, experts and civic bodies are calling for:

  • A comprehensive urban fire safety master plan

  • Strict penalties for violations of fire norms

  • Technology integration in monitoring fire-prone zones

  • Community awareness programs on safety and prevention

Legal experts also advocate for the introduction of a Fire Safety Act in Telangana, modeled after similar legislation in states like Maharashtra and Delhi.

The fire near Charminar is a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities that persist in the heart of even the most iconic cities. As Hyderabad grieves for the lives lost, it must also rise to the challenge of improving its infrastructure, enforcing safety regulations, and building a culture of preparedness.

This tragedy is not just about an accident — it is a wake-up call demanding urban accountabilitytechnological foresight, and community-centric governance.
