Fuel Price Update May 5, 2025: No Relief in Petrol and Diesel Rates Since March 2024 – Check Prices in Your City

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Despite public expectations, no price revision has been made in petrol and diesel rates as of May 5, 2025. The state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have kept fuel prices unchanged across all major cities. The last revision occurred more than a year ago, in March 2024, when a modest ₹2 per litre cut was announced for both petrol and diesel.

Since then, prices have remained frozen, offering no additional relief to consumers who are grappling with high fuel costs amidst inflationary pressures.

When Was the Last Fuel Price Cut?

The last revision in fuel prices was on March 5, 2024, when:

  • Petrol prices were reduced by ₹2 per litre.

  • Diesel prices were reduced by ₹2 per litre.

This minor cut was seen as an election-season relief. However, despite fluctuating global crude oil prices and changes in forex rates, no new price adjustments have been made by oil companies in over a year.

City-Wise Petrol and Diesel Prices on May 5, 2025

City Petrol (₹/Litre) Diesel (₹/Litre)
Delhi ₹94.72 ₹87.62
Mumbai ₹103.44 ₹89.97
Kolkata ₹103.94 ₹90.76
Chennai ₹100.85 ₹92.44
Bengaluru ₹102.86 ₹91.02
Lucknow ₹94.65 ₹87.76
Noida ₹94.87 ₹88.01
Gurugram ₹95.19 ₹88.05
Chandigarh ₹94.24 ₹82.40
Patna ₹105.18 ₹92.04

Note: Prices are inclusive of state-specific taxes and may vary depending on local VAT and transportation charges.

Why Are Fuel Prices Still High in India?

Several factors contribute to the unchanged and high prices of petrol and diesel in India:

1. Global Crude Oil Volatility

India imports more than 80% of its crude oil. Any fluctuation in international crude prices directly impacts domestic pricing. Although Brent crude saw a dip earlier this year, Indian consumers did not benefit.

2. Excise Duty and State Taxes

A large portion of fuel prices comes from central excise duty and state VAT. Despite declining crude rates at times, taxes remain static, keeping prices high.

3. Oil Marketing Companies’ Pricing Strategy

OMCs like Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) claim that daily price revision continues, but rates have effectively remained unchanged due to policy pressure.

Who Regulates Fuel Prices in India?

Fuel prices in India are technically deregulated, meaning they are determined by oil companies based on:

  • International crude prices

  • Rupee-dollar exchange rate

  • Refinery and transportation costs

  • Dealer commission

  • Central and state taxes

However, political and public sentiment often affects price revision decisions, particularly during election cycles.

How to Check Petrol and Diesel Prices Online?

You can check fuel prices for your city through the official websites or SMS services of oil marketing companies:

Or, SMS your city code to:

  • IOC: Type “RSP <space> dealer code” to 9224992249

  • BPCL: Type “RSP <space> dealer code” to 9223112222

  • HPCL: Type “HPPRICE <space> dealer code” to 9222201122

Is There a Possibility of Future Price Cuts?

With the general elections around the corner in several states, there are speculations of a possible fuel price relief. However, industry analysts remain cautious.

Unless:

  • Global crude oil prices fall consistently

  • Rupee strengthens against the US dollar

  • Government reduces excise or VAT

…it’s unlikely that prices will come down significantly in the short term.

Fuel Price Trends: March 2024 to May 2025

Date Petrol Price (Delhi) Diesel Price (Delhi)
March 2024 ₹92.72 ₹85.62
July 2024 ₹94.72 ₹87.62
November 2024 ₹94.72 ₹87.62
February 2025 ₹94.72 ₹87.62
May 2025 ₹94.72 ₹87.62

No changes observed in the last 14 months.

Impact on Consumers and Transport Sector

For Common Citizens:

  • Higher transportation cost

  • Increased household expenses

  • Direct effect on inflation

For Transporters:

  • Increased freight charges

  • Effect on supply chains and logistics

Public transport operators and cab drivers continue to appeal for government intervention or subsidies.

Fuel Cost Saving Tips for Vehicle Owners

With no price drop in sight, here’s how to minimize your fuel expenses:

  1. Maintain your vehicle regularly to improve mileage.

  2. Avoid excessive idling – it burns more fuel than restarting.

  3. Use fuel-efficient driving techniques (smooth acceleration, moderate speed).

  4. Carpool or use public transport whenever possible.

  5. Use fuel price tracking apps to find the cheapest fuel stations nearby.

 Public Reaction and Government’s Silence

Public frustration is growing, especially in metro cities where the cost of living is already high. Many citizens have taken to social media to express concern over stagnant prices despite favorable market conditions.

Meanwhile, the government has not issued any statement regarding fuel price revision, further deepening dissatisfaction.

As of May 5, 2025, petrol and diesel prices in India remain unchanged and continue to burden households and businesses alike. With no revision since March 2024, the demand for transparency and fuel tax rationalization is increasing.
