Today’s weather (27 April 2025): Thunderstorms, rain in eastern states

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | As of today, 27 April 2025, India is witnessing two contrasting weather patterns. While some regions, especially eastern and northeastern states, are bracing for thunderstorms and rainfall, other parts, particularly in western and central India, are struggling under the intense grip of a heatwave. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts, warning of severe weather activity across the country.

Thunderstorms and Rain Expected in Eastern India

According to IMD’s latest bulletin, regions like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Eastern Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds today. The alert covers northeastern states as well, including parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

On Saturday night, light rain showers were recorded over northwestern West Bengal and parts of Odisha, confirming the onset of unstable weather. IMD has warned that stormy conditions are expected to persist through today and possibly extend into the next 48 hours.

Specific IMD Warning for Bihar and Neighboring States

The IMD has issued a special weather advisory for Bihar, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall across several districts. In addition to thunderstorms, parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh are also under a heatwave warning, creating a unique dual-weather situation.

Cities like Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur may witness sudden changes in weather, leading to localized flooding and temporary power disruptions due to strong winds and lightning strikes.

Relief from Heat in Northern India, but Temperatures Remain High

In the northwestern belt of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, mild showers and thunderstorms are expected later today. Despite potential rainfall, temperatures across this region have already surpassed the 40°C mark.

  • Delhi recorded maximum temperatures between 41°C and 43°C on Saturday.

  • Vidarbha region in Maharashtra saw scorching temperatures around 45°C.

The IMD has indicated that while some northern states will see brief relief due to rain and winds, overall heat conditions will prevail throughout most of next week.

Heatwave Alert Across 12 States

IMD has placed a yellow to orange alert over nearly 12 states. These include:

  • Rajasthan

  • Punjab

  • Haryana

  • Delhi

  • Uttar Pradesh

  • Madhya Pradesh

  • Maharashtra (particularly Vidarbha)

  • Gujarat

  • Telangana

  • Andhra Pradesh

  • Odisha

  • Chhattisgarh

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and follow official advisories to prevent heatstroke and related health issues.

Kal Baisakhi Brings Pre-Monsoon Rainfall in Eastern and Northeastern States

The phenomenon of Kal Baisakhi (pre-monsoon thunderstorms) has started impacting eastern India. According to IMD:

  • North Bengal districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri are forecasted to receive heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next two days.

  • The impact is also expected to extend into Sikkim, southern Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

Gusty winds up to 50 km/h are predicted, which could disrupt normal life, uproot trees, and cause minor structural damage.

Southern India: Rain with Strong Winds

Despite experiencing high temperatures, parts of Southern India are also likely to witness thunderstorms:

  • Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Mahe, and Tamil Nadu may experience winds reaching 50–60 km/h.

  • Sporadic heavy rainfall is possible, especially in interior Tamil Nadu and coastal Kerala.

The IMD has advised fishermen and coastal communities to remain cautious due to rough sea conditions.

Temperature Trends: Next 5 Days Across India

Looking at IMD’s five-day temperature trend forecast:

  • In Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan, no significant change is expected for the next two days. Post that, a gradual increase of 2–3°C is anticipated.

  • Following this brief rise, temperatures may again dip by 2–3°C around midweek.

  • Eastern India will see a temperature drop of around 2–3°C over the next 48 hours due to rain activities.

  • In Uttar Pradesh, IMD forecasts a decrease of about 2–3°C in maximum temperatures over the coming week.

  • Gujarat and Central India are likely to see further heating, pushing mercury levels higher.

City-wise Weather Updates for Today

City Weather Outlook Temperature Range (°C)
Delhi Hot, Light Rain in Evening 41–43
Mumbai Hot and Humid 34–36
Kolkata Rain Showers, Thunderstorms 30–32
Bengaluru Thunderstorms Expected 28–30
Patna Thunderstorms, Heatwave Alert 38–40
Jaipur Very Hot, Mild Rain Possible 42–44
Hyderabad Windy with Rain Chances 34–36

IMD’s Precautions and Public Advisory

In view of the severe heatwave and sudden thunderstorms, the Indian Meteorological Department has urged the public to take necessary precautions:

  • During Heatwave:

    • Drink sufficient water.

    • Avoid going out in the afternoon.

    • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing.

  • During Thunderstorms:

    • Stay indoors.

    • Unplug electrical appliances during lightning.

    • Secure loose items outdoors.

As India battles dual weather extremes on 27 April 2025, citizens are urged to stay vigilant. While eastern and northeastern states might get a temporary respite from the heat through thunderstorms, most western and central regions must brace for intense heatwave conditions.
