Bihar Weather Update: Rising Temperatures and Heatwave Expected

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Bihar is once again bracing for a surge in temperatures as the summer heat intensifies across the state. The state, which had seen some relief from scorching temperatures due to recent thunderstorms and light rain, is now set to experience a heatwave. The temperature in Bihar is expected to rise to around 40°C, and the state meteorological department has issued warnings for several districts. This article provides a detailed forecast and insights on the regions most affected by the heat.

Recent Weather Trends in Bihar

Over the past few days, Bihar’s weather has been fluctuating with intermittent thunderstorms and light rains. This provided temporary relief to residents, especially those in urban areas. However, as the weather patterns change, the situation is set to take a dramatic turn for the hotter. The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) has forecasted a significant increase in temperature starting Sunday, April 20, and continuing over the next four days. The heatwave will impact large portions of the state, especially in the southern and southwestern regions.

Rising Temperatures in Bihar: What’s Driving the Heat?

The weather department has predicted an increase in the maximum temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in the coming days. This means that several districts in Bihar will experience temperatures exceeding 40°C. Meteorologists believe that the heat will be particularly intense in the southwestern areas of the state and will be accompanied by high humidity levels, making it feel even hotter than it actually is.

The situation will worsen as temperatures rise in various districts, with certain areas experiencing “hot days” (also referred to as heatwaves). The highest recorded temperature in the state on Saturday, April 19, was 38°C in Dehri. This figure indicates the start of a general upward trend in the state’s temperature.

Forecast for the Next Few Days: A Hot Spell Ahead

According to the latest updates from the IMD, the weather over the next two days (April 20 and April 21) will be characterized by slight rainfall in some parts of Bihar. Additionally, thunderstorms with thunder and lightning are expected in regions such as Supaul, Araria, Purnia, and Kishanganj. These areas will also experience strong winds, adding to the unsettled weather.

However, the weather department has clarified that these storms will not last long, and after Sunday, there will be no further warnings issued. The overall trend points to a return of extreme heat, with minimal chances of rainfall to offer any reprieve.

Heatwave Conditions Predicted in Multiple Districts

On April 20, 2025, the Meteorological Department predicted a rise of 2 to 4 degrees in maximum temperatures across most of Bihar. The forecast indicates that from April 22 to April 23, intense heat conditions will prevail in several districts. These areas are likely to experience a heatwave, which could be dangerous for vulnerable populations.

The districts expected to experience heatwave conditions include:

  • Banka

  • Jamui

  • Munger

  • Lakhisarai

  • Sheikhpura

  • Nawada

  • Nalanda

  • Patna

  • Gaya

  • Buxar

  • Aurangabad

  • Kaimur

  • Rohtas

  • Jehanabad

  • Arwal

What is a Heatwave?

A heatwave is defined as a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity. This type of weather can have serious effects on health, particularly for the elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. During heatwaves, the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke increases.

Heatwave Precautions: How to Stay Safe

With temperatures set to soar in Bihar over the next few days, it is crucial to take precautions to stay safe during the hot weather. The following safety tips can help residents cope with the heat:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate the body.

  2. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 11 AM and 4 PM. If you must go outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen.

  3. Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose, light-colored clothing made of natural fabrics like cotton to help your body stay cool.

  4. Take Cool Showers: A cold shower can provide temporary relief from the heat. If you do not have access to air conditioning, try using a fan or cooling your skin with damp towels.

  5. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms of heatstroke include dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion, and rapid heartbeat. If you or someone else shows signs of heatstroke, seek medical help immediately.

  6. Limit Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous physical activities during the peak heat hours. If you must exercise, do so in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are lower.

Impact on Daily Life and Agriculture

The rising temperatures will also have a significant impact on daily life in Bihar. As the heat intensifies, power consumption is likely to surge, leading to a higher demand for electricity and a potential strain on the power grid. Farmers will also face challenges as the heat affects crops, especially those that are sensitive to extreme temperatures. In addition to this, the rising heat could exacerbate water scarcity issues, particularly in rural areas.

As Bihar braces for another round of extreme heat, residents are advised to take all necessary precautions to stay safe. The weather is set to become increasingly hot, with heatwave conditions expected to affect several districts over the next few days. While light rain and thunderstorms may provide temporary relief in certain areas, the overall trend points to a sustained period of high temperatures.
