Bihar’s Seven Airports to Begin Flight Operations Under UDAN Scheme:

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a major boost to regional connectivity and the aviation sector in Bihar, the Central Government has granted approval for the operation of flights from seven airports in the state under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme. This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing air connectivity in small towns and rural areas, making air travel more accessible and affordable. Along with the approval for flight operations, the government has also allocated ₹190 crore for the development of these airports, which will be carried out by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in partnership with the state government.

Approval for Flight Operations from Seven Airports

The seven airports that have received clearance for flight operations under the UDAN scheme include:

  1. Birpur (Supaul) Airport

  2. Saharsa Airport

  3. Munger Airport

  4. Muzaffarpur Airport

  5. Valmikinagar (West Champaran) Airport

  6. Madhubani Airport

  7. Purnia Airport

These airports will facilitate the operation of 20-seater aircraft, providing much-needed connectivity to smaller cities and towns in Bihar. This move is aimed at reducing travel time, improving accessibility, and making air travel more economical for the residents of these areas.

Development of Airports and Investment of ₹190 Crore

The Central Government has earmarked a substantial investment of ₹190 crore for the development of these airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will oversee the development and upgrading of the facilities at these locations, ensuring that they meet the standards required for flight operations. To further streamline the development process, the Bihar State Government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AAI for the smooth implementation of the project.

This investment is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance regional air connectivity across the country and to ensure that even remote and underserved areas are brought into the national aviation network.

Key Highlights of the UDAN Scheme and its Impact

The UDAN scheme, which stands for “Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik,” was launched by the Indian Government to make air travel affordable and accessible to the masses. It is particularly focused on connecting smaller towns and rural areas to major cities, thus promoting regional development and economic growth.

The introduction of flights from these seven airports in Bihar is expected to yield numerous benefits for both the local economy and residents. These include:

  1. Boosting Regional Connectivity: The UDAN scheme will provide an affordable and efficient mode of transportation between small towns and major cities, significantly improving connectivity for people living in remote areas.

  2. Economic Growth: With improved air connectivity, business opportunities will increase, and regional industries will have easier access to national and international markets. This, in turn, will contribute to economic development in these areas.

  3. Tourism Boost: Bihar’s tourism industry, which has seen steady growth in recent years, will benefit immensely from the enhanced air connectivity. The Valmikinagar area, home to Bihar’s Tiger Reserve, is one of the key tourist destinations that will see an increase in tourist traffic with the development of the local airport.

  4. Job Creation: The development of these airports will create new job opportunities in various sectors, including aviation, hospitality, and logistics. This will have a positive impact on the livelihoods of the local population.

  5. Improved Access to Education and Healthcare: Better air connectivity will also improve access to education and healthcare facilities in these areas, as residents will be able to travel more quickly and easily to major cities for specialized services.

Valmikinagar: A Key Tourism Destination to Benefit

One of the most significant beneficiaries of this development will be Valmikinagar, located in West Champaran. This area is home to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve, one of Bihar’s prominent wildlife sanctuaries. In recent years, Valmikinagar has seen a surge in tourist visits due to its rich biodiversity and serene landscapes.

Currently, tourists traveling to Valmikinagar face challenges due to the lack of convenient transportation options. However, with the development of an airport in this area, tourists will be able to reach the reserve much more quickly, leading to an increase in the number of visitors. This will not only boost local tourism but also help in preserving and promoting the state’s natural heritage.

The approval for flight operations from seven airports in Bihar under the UDAN scheme is a transformative development for the state. This initiative will enhance regional connectivity, promote economic growth, support the tourism industry, and create new job opportunities. The allocation of ₹190 crore for the development of these airports highlights the Central Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring that even remote areas are well-connected.

As these airports are developed and flight operations begin, Bihar will witness a significant shift in the way people travel, work, and engage with the broader national economy. The UDAN scheme is not just about air travel; it’s about building the future of connectivity, development, and prosperity for the people of Bihar.
