IMD Issues Weather Alert for 18 States as Cyclones in Iraq and Bangladesh Trigger Rain and Thunderstorms Across India

Published on

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for 18 states as changing weather patterns are expected to bring rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across various regions. The warning, issued on Tuesday, is anticipated to remain in effect until March 15, impacting multiple parts of the country.

Cyclones in Iraq and Bangladesh Influence India’s Weather

Two separate cyclonic systems—one in Iraq and another in Bangladesh—are causing unstable weather conditions in India. These systems are pulling moisture-laden winds, leading to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several states.

Meteorologists suggest that the western disturbances, combined with these external cyclonic activities, are playing a crucial role in shaping India’s current weather scenario. As a result, many regions are likely to witness sudden temperature drops, hailstorms, and localized flooding.

States Under Weather Alert

The IMD has placed the following 18 states under caution due to the anticipated weather changes:

  1. Delhi – Light showers expected with a dip in temperature.
  2. Uttar Pradesh – Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely in several districts.
  3. Bihar – Heavy rain in northern and central parts.
  4. Jharkhand – Isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
  5. West Bengal – Strong winds and heavy rainfall predicted.
  6. Odisha – Coastal regions may see intense rainfall with storm-like conditions.
  7. Chhattisgarh – Moderate to heavy rain in isolated areas.
  8. Madhya Pradesh – Thunderstorms likely, with occasional hail.
  9. Rajasthan – Sporadic rainfall and gusty winds.
  10. Gujarat – Strong winds with light showers in some parts.
  11. Maharashtra – Rain and thunderstorms over central and northern regions.
  12. Goa – Cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall.
  13. Telangana – Thunderstorms likely in isolated districts.
  14. Andhra Pradesh – Coastal regions could see intense rainfall and wind activity.
  15. Karnataka – Scattered rain expected in southern and interior parts.
  16. Kerala – Heavy rainfall in multiple districts.
  17. Tamil Nadu – Thunderstorms and showers expected across the state.
  18. Assam – Northeast areas may experience thunderstorms and strong winds.

Weather Patterns and Their Impact

The changing weather is attributed to the interaction of western disturbances and cyclonic systems, which are increasing moisture levels and cloud formation across India. This has led to a shift in temperature, humidity, and wind patterns, affecting both urban and rural areas.

The IMD has warned that some regions may experience:

  • Hailstorms in central and northern states.
  • Lightning strikes in multiple areas, especially in eastern and northeastern regions.
  • Strong winds leading to potential damage to weak structures and trees.
  • Localized flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall.

Precautions for the Public

Authorities have urged citizens to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of unstable weather. Some essential safety measures include:

  • Avoiding outdoor activities, especially in storm-prone areas.
  • Staying indoors during heavy rainfall and lightning.
  • Securing loose objects that may be carried away by strong winds.
  • Avoiding unnecessary travel, particularly in flood-prone or hilly areas.
  • Farmers are advised to protect crops from hailstorms and excessive moisture.

How Cyclones Outside India Are Affecting the Weather

Although the cyclonic systems in Iraq and Bangladesh are far from India, their influence on wind circulation is creating instability in the Indian subcontinent. The low-pressure areas formed due to these systems are pulling moist air from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, leading to widespread rainfall and storms.

Experts believe that such cross-border weather influences are becoming more common due to climate change and shifting monsoon patterns. This event highlights the interconnected nature of global weather systems and their direct impact on India’s climate stability.

Forecast for the Coming Days

The rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist until March 15, with varying intensities across different states. After this period, the weather may gradually stabilize, but sporadic rainfall and temperature fluctuations could continue in some regions.

IMD experts are closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates to ensure public safety and preparedness.

The IMD’s warning for 18 states due to the impact of cyclones in Iraq and Bangladesh highlights the unpredictable nature of India’s weather patterns. With heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected in several regions, citizens and authorities must remain alert.

As weather changes continue to be influenced by global climate systems, such events serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and timely action to minimize risks and disruptions. Keeping track of official weather updates and following safety guidelines will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by this unusual weather event.
