Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). • Direct contact with contaminated surfaces or infected individuals.

Ahmedabad reported its first case of HMPV this season on January 6, following global attention on the disease after an outbreak in China. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and advising precautionary measures to limit the virus’s spread.

What to Do to Prevent HMPV?

  1. Practice Hygiene:
    • Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
    • Use hand sanitizers when soap is unavailable.
  2. Avoid Close Contact:
    • Maintain distance from individuals showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses.
    • Avoid touching your face, especially eyes, nose, and mouth.

    • Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly.
  4. Seek Medical Attention:

The rising cases of HMPV in Gujarat, particularly Ahmedabad, highlight the need for public awareness and vigilance. While the virus is not new, its resurgence and potential for respiratory complications warrant prompt preventive measures and timely medical interventions.
