Tragic Lightning Strikes in Prayagraj: Five Dead, Including Two Young Children

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | A series of tragic lightning strikes rocked Prayagraj’s Bara Tehsil late Saturday night, claiming the lives of five individuals, including two toddlers. The devastating event occurred in two separate villages—Sonbarsa and Kalyanpur—confirming the seriousness of lightning threats in rural Uttar Pradesh during the monsoon season.

Lightning Fatalities in Bara Tehsil: What Happened?

Sonbarsa Village Tragedy

Shortly after midnight, a fatal lightning bolt struck near Sonbarsa village.

  • Victims: Virendra Banwasi (35), wife Parvati (32), daughters Radha (3) and Karishma (2)

  • The entire family was asleep in their thatched hut when lightning tore through it.

  • All four family members were fatally injured and pronounced dead on the spot. The hut caught fire and burned to the ground.

Kalyanpur Village Incident

In Kalyanpur near Sankargarh police station, a second lightning strike at night claimed another life:

  • Victim: Akshay Kumar (29)

  • Injured: his wife Kusum (27), critically injured and hospitalized in a private Sankargarh hospital.

The Bararah Police and Sankargarh Police promptly dispatched teams to the villages to aid forensic and rescue efforts. Local officials are coordinating with the SDM Bara, Tehsildar, and revenue officers to assess assistance.

The Monsoon and Rising Lightning Fatalities

India faces 200–300 reported lightning deaths annually, with Uttar Pradesh among the most affected states. Lightning remains a leading cause of natural disaster–related fatalities after floods.

Why Prayagraj Sees Frequent Lightning-Related Deaths

  1. Geography and Climate: Intense monsoon systems over the Gangetic Plain produce strong thunderstorms.

  2. Poor Living Conditions: Thatch huts offer negligible protection against lightning, creating high risks.

  3. Lack of Awareness: Low awareness of lightning safety among rural residents increases danger.

  4. Guerrilla Development: Absence of proper electrical wiring and lightning arresters.

Government Response: Quick Relief Announced

In his on-site visit to Sonbarsa and Kalyanpur, SDM Bara Sandeep Tiwari emphasized that the Disaster Relief Fund will provide immediate financial assistance starting next week.

Though precise amounts are pending, the assistance will cover:

  • Funeral and cremation costs

  • Immediate cash relief for widows and orphans

  • Basic food and household kits

The Tehsildar Ganesh Kumar added that affected families will receive counseling to cope with the trauma.

Lightning Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe

With monsoon thunderstorms expected to continue, rural families must stay vigilant. Here’s current weather data and precautionary advice:

 Safe Practices During Lightning

  • Move indoors during storms—preferably solid, lightning-safe structures (brick houses).

  • Avoid isolated trees, open fields, metal fences, and water sources.

  • Stay away from electrical wiring, metal objects, and open vehicles.

  • Use sturdy umbrellas and keep electronics and metal tools indoors.

 Lightning-Proof Your Home

  • Install lightning arresters and earthing rods on rooftops.

  • Keep wired electronics unplugged during storms.

  • Raise public awareness through government and NGO camps about lightning risks.

 Next Steps by the Administration

Following the dual tragedies, local officials announced:

  1. Rapid relief disbursement under the Disaster Fund

  2. Internet and helpline deployment for lightning safety advisories

  3. Educational campaigns via schools and social groups

  4. Geo-mapping of lightning hotspots for future risk mitigation

A comprehensive action plan is underway—including free earthing rod distribution and local volunteer-led awareness drives.

Comparative Data: Lightning Fatalities in India (2021–2025)

Year Estimated Lightning Deaths in UP Notes
2021 320 Highest nationwide
2022 290 Intense monsoon
2023 240 New LED guidelines introduced
2024 200 Reduction, better awareness
2025* 150+ (by June) Early surge during early monsoon

*Statistics from National Disaster Management Authority – formed via local media.

This alarming pattern highlights Uttar Pradesh’s vulnerability due to geography and settlement patterns.

 Community: Stepping Up During Crises

Local residents played a role in early rescue:

  • Locals rushed to extinguish the burning hut in Sonbarsa

  • Townsfolk from neighboring Sankargarh assisted in carrying Kusum to hospital

While fatalities are heart-wrenching, rapid response by villagers underscores the importance of community-level vigilance.

The lightning tragedies in Prayagraj Bara Tehsil are a stark reminder that natural disasters can strike farmhouses and villages without warning. The loss of an entire family and a young man highlight the urgent need for:

  • Improved housing infrastructure

  • Public education on monsoon and lightning safety

  • Government support through disaster relief and future lightning-proof schemes

As the region gears up for heavier rainfall, community-based awareness and safety measures are vital. The collective response—from survivors to public authorities—can reduce future tragedies and save lives.
