Monsoon for Uttar Pradesh: IMD Predicts Rainfall in Several Districts Today

Published by

KKN Gurugram Desk | The long wait for the monsoon in Uttar Pradesh may soon be over. According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon conditions are rapidly approaching the state. Several districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall today as pre-monsoon activity intensifies.

This announcement brings a wave of relief to millions of residents who have been experiencing soaring temperatures and dry conditions for the past several weeks. Farmers, in particular, are eagerly awaiting rainfall to kickstart sowing activities across the state.

Monsoon Progress 2025: IMD’s Key Update for Uttar Pradesh

As per the IMD’s latest forecast, monsoon winds have advanced into parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, and favorable conditions are building up for further progress into central and western regions over the coming days. The official monsoon onset in UP is expected within the next few days, potentially earlier than last year.

IMD’s Statement:

“Conditions are becoming favorable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Uttar Pradesh. Rainfall activity will increase over the next 48–72 hours.”

The weather agency has also issued alerts for rain and thunderstorms in several districts across eastern and central UP today.

Rainfall Alert: These UP Districts May Receive Rain Today

Based on the IMD regional bulletin, scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to affect the following districts:

  • Varanasi

  • Gorakhpur

  • Prayagraj

  • Lucknow

  • Kanpur

  • Ayodhya

  • Sultanpur

  • Bareilly

  • Bahraich

  • Basti

Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert for weather changes, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when pre-monsoon storms tend to peak.

Temperature Relief Expected as Clouds Move In

The arrival of cloud cover and intermittent showers is expected to bring relief from the scorching summer heat. Until now, most parts of Uttar Pradesh have recorded maximum temperatures between 40–44°C, with high humidity levels.

With the approaching monsoon, the IMD forecasts a drop in temperatures by 3–5°C across many areas starting today. Minimum temperatures are also expected to fall gradually, providing comfort during the night.

Predicted Temperature Range:

  • Minimum: 26–28°C

Farmers Await Monsoon for Kharif Sowing

For the agricultural heartland of India, timely and adequate rainfall is critical. The monsoon rains in Uttar Pradesh mark the beginning of Kharif crop sowing, including paddy, maize, and pulses.

This year, a slight delay in monsoon onset had raised concerns among farmers, particularly in eastern UP. However, with the IMD’s latest announcement, agricultural activities are expected to begin soon.

The Department of Agriculture has advised farmers to prepare their fields and stay in touch with local weather updates before initiating sowing.

Monsoon Trends Across North India

Not just Uttar Pradesh, but neighboring states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh have also reported an increase in pre-monsoon showers. The southwest monsoon has already covered most of the southern and northeastern regions of India, and its northern push is gaining momentum.

IMD’s Nationwide Monsoon Update:

  • Monsoon active over: Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam

  • Expected next phase: UP, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh

Meteorologists suggest that monsoon 2025 is progressing at a near-normal pace, barring slight delays in its entry into central and northern India.

IMD Issues Advisory for Lightning and Gusty Winds

While rainfall is welcome, thunderstorms and lightning can pose risks to life and property. The IMD has issued an advisory for gusty winds (30–40 km/h), lightning strikes, and temporary disruption in rural power lines and communications.

Safety Tips from IMD:

  • Avoid taking shelter under trees during a thunderstorm

  • Stay indoors and unplug electronic devices during lightning

  • Farmers should avoid working in open fields during active thundercloud periods

  • Commuters are advised to check local weather before travel

When Will Monsoon Fully Cover Uttar Pradesh?

According to current models, the full-fledged monsoon is expected to cover most of UP by June 20–22, 2025. However, actual dates may vary based on local atmospheric conditions and wind patterns.

Experts from the Skymet Weather agency have also backed the IMD’s projection, saying:

“We expect widespread rainfall activity in Uttar Pradesh by the third week of June. The moisture build-up and wind patterns are highly supportive of monsoon advancement.”

Urban Flooding & Drainage Prep Underway

In major cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi, local municipal bodies have already begun preparations to manage urban flooding, which often accompanies heavy monsoon showers. Drain cleaning drives and emergency response teams have been activated to ensure that public mobility and infrastructure are not severely disrupted.

The UP Disaster Management Authority has instructed district magistrates to keep rescue and relief teams on standby for vulnerable areas, especially flood-prone regions along the Ghaghara and Ganga rivers.

The monsoon season in Uttar Pradesh is finally knocking at the door, bringing hope for millions dependent on agriculture, relief from sweltering temperatures, and a shift in the seasonal cycle.

With rainfall likely to begin today in several districts, residents are advised to stay weather-aware and follow updates from IMD and local authorities. Whether you’re a commuter, a farmer, or a city resident, the next few days will be crucial in transitioning into the monsoon phase.
