Weather Update on April 17, 2025 – Heatwave and Rainfall Alerts in India

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the ongoing heatwave conditions in western Rajasthan and Gujarat. According to the latest forecast, these regions will continue to experience intense heat until April 18, 2025. The weather department has also predicted that some areas might witness heatwave conditions on April 19 as well. Meanwhile, Delhi has been experiencing some relief from the heat, and heavy rainfall has been forecast for Bihar today.

Let’s dive into the details of the weather forecast for various regions in India over the next five days.

Heatwave Conditions in Western Rajasthan and Gujarat

IMD Heatwave Warning for Rajasthan and Gujarat:
The India Meteorological Department has predicted that several parts of Rajasthan, particularly in the western regions, will continue to endure extreme heat and heatwave conditions till April 18. The temperature in these areas has already crossed the 40°C mark, and it’s expected to stay that way for the next few days.

Key Areas Affected by the Heatwave:
Cities like Jodhpur, Barmer, and Churu in Rajasthan, as well as Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, are expected to experience extreme heat. The ongoing heatwave is likely to cause discomfort and pose health risks, especially for those involved in outdoor activities.

Impact of the Heatwave:
With the high temperatures, the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion increases. The IMD has advised people to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight, and wearing loose, light-colored clothing.

What to Expect After April 18:
While the heat will begin to subside in the coming days, the possibility of heatwave conditions remains in some areas, including parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. As per the IMD, these regions could experience sporadic hot spells even after April 18, with temperatures remaining above normal for this time of year.

Heat Relief in Delhi

Delhi Weather Update:
Delhi, which has been enduring hot weather over the past few days, has finally received some respite. The capital city’s weather has been relatively cooler, with temperatures not exceeding the 38°C mark. According to IMD reports, the city will experience favorable weather conditions for the next few days, with temperatures expected to stay within a comfortable range.

Forecast for the Next Few Days in Delhi:
Over the next five days, Delhiites can expect pleasant weather conditions, with the temperature likely to hover around 35°C to 38°C. The humidity levels will remain moderate, making it a much more comfortable period for outdoor activities compared to previous days.

Bihar and the Upcoming Rainfall Alert

Bihar Weather Update – Heavy Rainfall Expected:
Today, April 17, 2025, Bihar has been placed on high alert for heavy rainfall. The forecast suggests that moderate to heavy showers will occur throughout the day across various regions of Bihar, especially in Patna, Gaya, and other neighboring areas.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall:
The heavy rainfall in Bihar may lead to localized flooding, traffic disruptions, and delays in transportation. The IMD has advised residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during this time. It’s also important to take precautions for waterborne diseases that tend to spread during heavy rainfall.

Rainfall Forecast for Bihar (April 17-19, 2025):
Rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days, with a high possibility of intermittent showers throughout Bihar. These rains are likely to provide some relief from the ongoing heatwave in certain parts of the state.

Weather Conditions in Other Parts of India

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh:
The IMD has also issued weather warnings for parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. These states are expected to experience warm weather, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in some areas. However, these regions are not likely to face the extreme heatwave conditions seen in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Forecast for Northern and Eastern India:
Northern India, particularly states like Punjab and Haryana, will experience warm temperatures but not heatwave conditions. Similarly, eastern India, including West Bengal and Jharkhand, will continue to see pleasant temperatures, although isolated rain showers are expected in some parts, especially along the coastal regions.

Southern India:
In Southern India, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to have moderate temperatures, with occasional rain showers along the coast. Cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi will see temperatures ranging between 32°C to 35°C, which is typical for this time of year.

How to Stay Safe During a Heatwave

Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses:
During heatwaves, it’s crucial to follow safety guidelines to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion. The IMD advises individuals to follow these precautions:

  1. Hydrate Frequently: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages.

  2. Wear Light Clothing: Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton and avoid dark-colored clothes.

  3. Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay indoors during peak heat hours (usually between 12 PM and 4 PM).

  4. Take Cool Showers: If possible, take cool showers or use a wet cloth to cool down.

  5. Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF before stepping out to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

For Vulnerable Populations:
The elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as heart disease or respiratory issues are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat conditions. Extra care should be taken to protect these individuals from heat-related illnesses.

The Impact of Climate Change on Heatwaves

Increasing Frequency of Heatwaves in India:
Climate change has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in various parts of the world, including India. Over the past few years, extreme heat events have become more common, especially in regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra. The rise in global temperatures has led to longer and more intense heat spells, significantly affecting agriculture, water resources, and human health.

What Needs to Be Done:
To combat the impact of heatwaves and rising temperatures, experts suggest that urgent action needs to be taken to mitigate the effects of climate change. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and implementing better urban planning to ensure that cities can withstand extreme heat conditions.

As the weather department issues heatwave warnings for Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Bihar, it is important to stay prepared for the upcoming weather conditions. While some regions are experiencing extreme heat, others are getting relief in the form of rainfall. Whether you’re in a heatwave-prone area or facing heavy rainfall, always follow safety guidelines and stay informed about the latest weather updates.

By staying aware of the weather forecasts, you can take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and well-being. Keep checking for updates from the IMD and local weather departments to stay prepared for any changes in the weather conditions in your area.
