Vice President Election 2025: CP Radhakrishnan Wins with Surprise Cross-Voting

Published on

The results of the Vice President election in India have sparked intense political debates. NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan emerged victorious, but the numbers have raised several questions. He secured 452 votes in total, which was 25 more than the NDA’s official strength of 427 in Parliament. With support from YSRCP’s 11 MPs, the total should have reached 438, but the additional 14 votes have fueled speculation of cross-voting from the opposition. The unexpected margin has now become the focal point of discussions in political circles.

Election Results and Numbers

According to the official announcement, CP Radhakrishnan received 452 votes, while INDIA bloc candidate Sudarshan Reddy failed to close the gap. Interestingly, 15 of Sudarshan Reddy’s votes were declared invalid. The NDA was expected to secure 427 votes, plus the backing of 11 MPs from YSRCP led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, bringing the total to 438. However, Radhakrishnan’s tally of 452 indicates clear cross-voting by members outside the NDA fold.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer PC Modi declared the results, noting a high turnout of 98.2 percent. Out of 781 eligible members of the electoral college, 767 participated, including one postal ballot. With 15 votes rejected as invalid, the final count reflected an unusual voting pattern that exposed cracks within the opposition alliance.

Composition of the Electoral College

The Vice President election involved 788 members in total, though 781 seats were currently filled. The electoral college comprised 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members, and 543 members of Lok Sabha. At the time of voting, five Rajya Sabha seats and one Lok Sabha seat were vacant. Notably, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) decided to abstain from the election, reducing the voting pool for both sides.

Allegations of Cross-Voting

Soon after the results were declared, BJP leaders claimed that cross-voting from the opposition helped Radhakrishnan achieve such a large margin. Reports suggested that MPs from Jharkhand and Maharashtra might have voted against their alliance lines. BJP sources highlighted that CP Radhakrishnan had previously served as Governor in both states, which may have influenced the decision of certain legislators.

Some opposition leaders pointed fingers at parties like Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT), alleging that their members did not stick to the INDIA bloc’s strategy. Both parties have strongly denied the allegations, calling them baseless. The ambiguity, however, has kept the issue alive in political corridors.

BJP Leaders React

Union Minister Piyush Goyal described the outcome as evidence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s growing influence. He emphasized that the 25 additional votes clearly indicate that opposition MPs were impressed by the government’s policies of progress, prosperity, and inclusive development. According to Goyal, even leaders who stood against the NDA recognized the direction in which the country was moving, which inspired them to back the NDA’s Vice President candidate.

Lok Sabha BJP Chief Whip Sanjay Jaiswal also expressed gratitude to all MPs who supported Radhakrishnan. Speaking to the media, he claimed that nearly 40 MPs from the opposition camp voted in favor of the NDA candidate after listening to their conscience. Jaiswal said the victory was not just a political win but also a moral endorsement of the NDA’s governance.

Opposition Faces Internal Questions

The INDIA alliance now finds itself under pressure after the results. Despite campaigning together, the loss has raised doubts about the unity of the bloc. Reports suggested that several opposition parties, including DMK, TMC, and RJD, openly supported Sudarshan Reddy, but internal divisions were exposed during voting. With 15 votes declared invalid, suspicions of coordination failures and dissatisfaction within the bloc have intensified.

Political analysts believe the election has revealed deep cracks in the INDIA alliance. The loss has not only reduced their confidence but also sent a message that the NDA continues to have influence even beyond its formal numbers. The incident has sparked debates on whether the opposition can maintain its unity ahead of future elections.

The Campaign Strategy

Insiders revealed that the BJP and its allies ran an extensive outreach campaign before the election. Although no whip was issued, the strategy was clear—to secure backing from fence-sitters and disgruntled MPs within the opposition. The effort appears to have worked as Radhakrishnan secured more votes than expected. Analysts argue that this election proved BJP’s ability to build consensus even among those who do not officially belong to the NDA.

A Shock for the INDIA Bloc

For the INDIA bloc, the Vice President election results have been a reality check. Their candidate Sudarshan Reddy not only lost by a wide margin but also saw 15 of his votes invalidated, signaling weak coordination. The alliance, which has been projecting itself as a united front against the NDA, now faces questions about its credibility and strength in Parliament.

The results also indicate that moral support within the opposition for the NDA’s candidate cannot be dismissed. Leaders and MPs who voted for Radhakrishnan may have been influenced by either personal respect for his previous roles or dissatisfaction with the INDIA bloc’s leadership.

Broader Political Implications

The Vice President election is not just a parliamentary event but also a reflection of the political mood. The cross-voting episode highlights that ideological divides are not always enough to ensure party loyalty. With general elections approaching, the ability of the NDA to attract support beyond its ranks could play a decisive role.

For the opposition, the challenge will be to strengthen discipline within its alliance and prevent future embarrassments. Political observers suggest that the INDIA bloc must work on building trust among its members, otherwise its dream of challenging the NDA may not materialize effectively.

The Vice President election of 2025 has delivered a clear victory for CP Radhakrishnan but also left behind a trail of political controversies. His 452 votes have not only ensured his win but also sparked debates about cross-voting and opposition unity. While the BJP celebrates the victory as a sign of Prime Minister Modi’s influence and NDA’s strength, the INDIA bloc faces tough questions about its solidarity.

The additional 14 votes and 15 invalid ballots have changed the narrative of a routine election into a significant political event. Going forward, the results will continue to be analyzed as a test of both ruling and opposition alliances. For now, Radhakrishnan’s victory stands as a symbol of shifting political loyalties and the evolving dynamics of Indian parliamentary politics.
