KKN Gurugram Desk | A relentless heatwave continues to roast Patna and most parts of southern Bihar, while northern districts brace for thunderstorms and strong winds. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heat and humidity alert for the next 24 hours in southern Bihar and an Orange Alert for heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds in northern Bihar.

The weather shift is expected to begin from Thursday, June 12, bringing potential relief from the scorching conditions. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance over parts of eastern India around June 14, according to the IMD’s latest bulletin.

Heatwave in Patna and Southern Bihar Reaches Dangerous Levels

The capital city of Patna is currently experiencing extremely hot and humid conditions, making daily life difficult for residents. On Tuesday, June 10, the maximum temperature in Patna soared to 40.4°C, well above normal levels for this time of year.

Other districts in southern Bihar such as Gaya, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, and Rohtas also reported maximum temperatures above 40°C, intensifying the ongoing heatwave. Dehri in Rohtas district was the hottest spot in the state with a temperature of 42.0°C.

The IMD’s Patna center has warned that no significant relief is expected from high temperatures in the next 24 hours, urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Weather Alert for North Bihar: Thunderstorms, Rain, and Strong Winds Expected

In stark contrast to the south, several northern districts of Bihar are likely to experience a change in weather patterns, with thunderstorms, lightning, and rain expected in the coming days. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for areas including:

  • East Champaran

  • West Champaran

  • Gopalganj

  • Sheohar

  • Sitamarhi

  • Madhubani

  • Supaul

  • Araria

  • Kishanganj

  • Purnia

  • Katihar

  • Madhepura

  • Saharsa

  • Samastipur

These districts may witness wind speeds between 50–80 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, especially starting Thursday.

Monsoon Progress and Meteorological Insights

According to the IMD, a trough line is currently active from northwest Uttar Pradesh to the central Bay of Bengal, passing through central Madhya Pradesh, southern Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. This meteorological development indicates that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into parts of eastern India, including Bihar, around June 14.

The monsoon’s arrival is expected to bring much-needed relief from the intense heat and dry conditions that have persisted across the state.

Temperature Rise Observed in Key Cities

While most of southern Bihar is facing a heatwave, temperatures have also risen across other major cities. Here are the latest temperature updates:

CityMax Temp (°C)Min Temp (°C)Temp Change

KishanganjN/AN/A+0.5°C

Notably, Muzaffarpur also experienced wind speeds up to 24 km/h during the day, providing minor relief from the heat.

Statewide Temperature Trends

There was no major change observed in the overall maximum and minimum temperatures across Bihar, with the exception of Chhapra, which saw a slight dip. Most districts saw a gradual increase in day temperatures, further intensifying the heatwave conditions.

The IMD has advised residents across southern Bihar to avoid outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours and stay hydrated. People with underlying health conditions, elderly citizens, and children are especially vulnerable during extreme weather events like this.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

The next 48 hours will be critical for both southern and northern Bihar. While the south continues to battle extreme heat and humidity, the north is preparing for potential thunderstorms and rainfall.

As monsoon currents begin to push forward from the Bay of Bengal, Bihar may finally get a much-needed break from dry and hot conditions. The expected advancement of monsoon around June 14 could stabilize the weather and bring down the temperature across the state.

 IMD Safety Advisory

  • Stay indoors between 12 PM and 4 PM.

  • Drink plenty of water and fluids.

  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

  • In thunderstorm-prone areas, stay away from open fields, electric poles, and trees.

Bihar’s weather remains sharply divided between scorching heat in the south and storm alerts in the north. With the arrival of monsoon just days away, residents are eagerly waiting for relief from the intense heat and unstable weather. Until then, both heatwave precautions and storm safety measures are crucial across the state.
