Nepal Political Crisis: Prime Minister KP Oli Resigns Amid Widespread Unrest

Published on

The political situation in Nepal has taken a dramatic turn after Prime Minister KP Oli submitted his resignation following days of violent protests. Kathmandu streets turned into a battlefield as demonstrations that began over a social media ban spiraled into full-scale unrest. The anger of citizens, particularly the younger generation, forced the Prime Minister to step down as the crisis deepened into a constitutional breakdown.

Resignation of PM KP Oli

Prime Minister KP Oli handed over his resignation letter to the President after protests reached his office premises. Hundreds of demonstrators stormed government buildings, including the Prime Minister’s residence, pushing the leader to step down. Initial reports suggested that Oli would leave the country immediately after resigning, but for now, he remains within Nepal’s borders. His decision came amid relentless violence and destruction that authorities struggled to control.

Social Media Ban Ignites National Uprising

The unrest was sparked when the government imposed a ban on social media platforms. On the first day, protests mainly focused on lifting the ban, but once restrictions were removed, attention shifted to demanding the fall of Oli’s government. The sudden transformation of a digital protest into a nationwide revolt revealed the growing frustration among the youth of Nepal. The demonstrations turned into one of the largest mass movements the country has witnessed in recent years.

Violence Erupts in Kathmandu

The capital city saw unprecedented violence as protesters set fire to several important buildings. The Parliament House, the private residence of the President, and the home of KP Oli were attacked and burned by angry mobs. Protesters also vandalized the homes of several ministers. In a shocking incident, Finance Minister was assaulted by demonstrators who chased him through the streets.

The level of violence left the government and security forces overwhelmed. In some places, ministers had to be airlifted from their residences after being held hostage by mobs. The scale of destruction marked a severe blow to Nepal’s political stability and raised concerns about the future of governance in the country.

Tragic Casualties

The unrest has already claimed several lives. On Monday alone, 19 protesters were reported dead in clashes with security forces. Their deaths further fueled public anger and intensified the violence. Enraged citizens torched residences of top political leaders, including the President and Prime Minister. The scale of the uprising highlights how quickly discontent spread from one issue to a national-level rebellion.

Gen Z Leads the Protests

A remarkable feature of the Nepal protests has been the overwhelming presence of young demonstrators. Thousands of Gen Z protestors took to the streets, armed with stones, sticks, and banners. Their movement was not confined to Kathmandu alone but spread across multiple regions of Nepal. This new generation, tech-savvy and politically aware, turned a simple protest into a full-blown demand for political change.

Security forces have found it extremely difficult to contain these young groups. Police have been struggling as demonstrators continue to outnumber them in several parts of the country. The rebellion showcases the power of Nepal’s youth and their determination to reshape the political narrative.

Army Takes Control

Following Oli’s resignation, the Nepalese Army has stepped in to restore order. Soldiers have been deployed across sensitive areas in Kathmandu and other cities. The Army issued a statement on Tuesday evening appealing for peace and urging citizens to refrain from violence. Until an interim government is formed, the Army is expected to oversee law and order in the country.

Despite the military’s appeal, peace seems far from certain. Many observers believe protests will continue into the coming days as people demand broader political reforms. The third consecutive day of protests is expected to bring fresh challenges for the Army.

International Concerns

Nepal’s crisis has drawn international attention as neighboring countries monitor the developments closely. The possibility of political instability in Nepal has raised concerns about regional security. Diplomatic missions have advised their citizens to avoid traveling to conflict-affected areas. The situation remains delicate, and foreign governments are likely to issue stronger advisories if unrest continues.

What Lies Ahead for Nepal?

The resignation of KP Oli has left Nepal at a crossroads. The immediate focus will be on forming an interim government capable of stabilizing the situation. However, challenges remain immense as public trust in political leadership has weakened. The younger generation, now the driving force of protests, may continue to press for deeper reforms.

The road ahead is uncertain. Whether Nepal can return to stability depends on how quickly political leaders respond to demands for change and how effectively the Army can maintain peace. For now, the nation faces both political and social upheaval that could shape its future trajectory.

The resignation of Prime Minister KP Oli marks a turning point in Nepal’s political landscape. What began as a protest against a social media ban has erupted into a nationwide revolt, forcing the government to collapse under pressure. With public anger at its peak and the Army taking control, Nepal’s immediate future hinges on swift political negotiations and restoration of public trust. Until then, Kathmandu and other parts of the country remain on edge, waiting for clarity on the path forward.
