KKN Gurugram desk | Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni, now a Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara, recently appeared on India TV’s most popular show, Aap Ki Adalat, where she addressed several controversial topics and revealed intriguing details about her life, Bollywood career, and spiritual journey. Hosted by India TV’s Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma, the episode featured hard-hitting questions about her alleged financial transactions, spiritual transformation, and Bollywood memories.
One of the most anticipated questions posed to Mamta Kulkarni was whether she would ever return to Bollywood. However, the former actress firmly rejected the idea.
“Like milk that has turned into ghee and cannot revert to its original form, I shall never return to films,” she stated, making it clear that her Bollywood chapter is permanently closed.
Mamta Kulkarni, who ruled the industry in the 90s with blockbuster films like Karan Arjun, Krantiveer, Tiranga, and Sabse Bada Khiladi, expressed her strong commitment to her spiritual path, emphasizing that she has lived like a sannyasin (hermit) for 23 years.
Despite numerous fan requests, including suggestions for a Karan Arjun sequel, she affirmed, “Ab Lautne Ka Sawaal Nahin Uthta” (There is no question of returning).
In one of the most controversial segments of the interview, Mamta Kulkarni was questioned about allegations that she paid ₹10 crore to become Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara.
Refuting these claims, she said,
“Forget ₹10 crore; I do not even have ₹1 crore. My bank accounts are frozen. I had to borrow ₹2 lakh just to offer ‘dakshina’ (offering) to my guru when I was appointed as Mahamandaleshwar.”
Kulkarni further revealed her financial struggles, stating that three of her apartments have been left abandoned for 23 years and are now infested with termites. She described her ongoing legal battles, including how a CBI official allegedly framed her to further his own career ambitions. She added that the High Court eventually dismissed the case, bringing some relief to her troubled financial condition.
The former actress also took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, sharing amusing anecdotes about her co-stars Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar.
One of the most memorable incidents she recalled was from the shooting of Karan Arjun, where SRK and Salman Khan played a prank on her during a dance sequence.
“Initially, both of them were supposed to dance with me. But the night before, our choreographer (Masterji) told me that only I had to dance. In front of three cameras, I performed the entire sequence in a single take. Afterward, I saw both SRK and Salman sitting behind the bushes, laughing!”
As payback, the two stars were later made to walk on their knees for the next shot, leading to 25 retakes in front of a massive crowd of 5,000 spectators.
When asked who was more mischievous on set, Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan, Mamta Kulkarni instantly replied,
“Zyada Sharaarati Salman Tha” (Salman was more mischievous).”
She described Salman Khan as the ultimate prankster, always pulling off practical jokes on set.
Another interesting topic raised was why, despite being a leading Bollywood star, Mamta Kulkarni agreed to do an item song in the 1996 film Ghatak.
She clarified,
“Director Rajkumar Santoshi personally requested me to do it. The film had been stuck for seven years because of its lead actress, Meenakshi Seshadri. I treated my dance number like a stage performance, which I have always been good at.”
Her performance in Ghatak became a sensation, further establishing her as one of Bollywood’s most dynamic performers of that era.
Mamta Kulkarni also addressed her infamous Stardust magazine cover, where she posed semi-nude, creating a huge controversy in the 90s.
Defending her decision, she explained,
“At that time, I was just in the ninth grade. Stardust magazine showed me a picture of Demi Moore, and I did not find it obscene. I was unaware of the implications back then.”
She also added,
“At one point, I had even said that I was a virgin because I did not know anything about sex or nudity. In the last 23 years, I have never even watched pornography.”
Dressed in saffron robes, Mamta Kulkarni sat cross-legged in the dock, answering questions about her spiritual transformation and criticism from religious leaders.
When asked about Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev’s statement that anyone can become a Mahamandaleshwar by offering money, she responded,
“I leave this to Ramdev Baba. What should I say?”
Regarding Bageshwar Dham’s Baba Dhirendra Shastri’s criticism, she dismissed him, saying,
“He is just a ‘nappy’ (immature) Dhirendra Shastri. I have performed penance for 23 years, which is longer than his entire age!”
Kulkarni revealed that she never actively sought to become Mahamandaleshwar, but Acharya Laxmi Narayan Tripathi of Kinnar Akhara insisted on appointing her.
“Main Toh Taiyar Nahin Thi Banne Ko” (I was not prepared for this role),” she added.
She also shared an extraordinary claim,
“For three months straight, I meditated continuously. I went five days without drinking water. On the 15th day, Maa Bhagwati appeared before me.”
