Karwa Chauth, one of the most significant festivals for married Hindu women, will be celebrated on Friday, October 10, 2025. This auspicious day marks a celebration of love, devotion, and the sacred bond between husband and wife, where women observe a strict day-long fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband’s long life, prosperity, and well-being.

Complete Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Ritual)

Pre-Dawn: Sargi Ritual

 A traditional Karwa Chauth puja thali with labeled items including mathri, badam, sweets, fruits, diya, sindoor, channi, and water for breaking the fast 

The day begins before sunrise with the Sargi ceremony, a beautiful tradition where the mother-in-law prepares special food for her daughter-in-law to consume before starting the fast.

Sargi Items Include:

  • Fruits (apple, banana, orange)

  • Dry fruits (almonds, dates, cashews)

  • Sweets (mathri, laddu)

  • Milk or lassi

  • Traditional breakfast items

  • Money or gifts from mother-in-law

Sargi Timing: Before 6:19 AM (before sunrise)

Morning Preparations (After Sunrise)

Once the sun rises, the strict Nirjala fast begins, meaning no food or water throughout the day until moonrise.

Morning Activities:

  1. Take a purifying bath

  2. Wear new or festive clothes (preferably red, pink, or yellow)

  3. Apply mehendi (henna) on hands and feet

  4. Adorn yourself with traditional jewelry, sindoor, and bangles

Evening Puja Ritual (5:57 PM to 7:11 PM)

The main puja ceremony begins during the auspicious muhurat time, typically performed collectively by women in the neighborhood or family.

Puja Items Required:

  • Decorated puja thali

  • Karwa (earthen pot filled with water)

  • Sieve (chalni) for moon viewing

  • Diya (oil lamps)

  • Incense sticks and dhoop

  • Flowers and garlands

  • Sweets and fruits

  • Sindoor and kumkum

  • Rice grains

  • New red cloth

  • Picture or idol of Goddess Parvati

Step-by-Step Puja Procedure:

  5. Group Ritual: Women sit in a circle, passing thalis clockwise while chanting mantras

  6. Elder’s Blessings: Seek blessings from mothers-in-law and elder women

  7. Aarti: Perform collective aarti with traditional songs

Moon Worship Ritual (After 8:13 PM)

The most significant moment arrives with moonrise, when women perform the moon worship ceremony to break their fast.

Moon Worship Procedure:

  1. Moon Sighting: Go to a place with clear moon visibility

  2. Thali Preparation: Arrange water-filled karwa, sweets, and lit diya on thali

  3. Moon Offering: View the moon through the sieve (chalni)

  4. Water Offering: Offer arghya (water) to the moon from the karwa

  5. Husband Viewing: Look at husband through the same sieve

  6. Fast Breaking: Husband offers the first sip of water and first bite of food

  7. Blessings: Touch husband’s feet and seek his blessings
