Iran-US Direct Talks Begin via Omani Mediation

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a significant diplomatic development, Iran and the United States have initiated direct backchannel talks through Omani mediation amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The discussions come at a critical juncture as Iran-Israel hostilities intensify, with Iran suggesting it may show flexibility in its nuclear program—but only if Israeli airstrikes cease immediately.

Senior diplomatic sources have confirmed that multiple phone conversations took place last week between U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The key objective of these talks is to seek a diplomatic resolution to the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, which has threatened regional stability since mid-June.

Missile Strikes and Nuclear Tensions: The Current Crisis

The latest escalation began on June 13, when Israeli jets launched air raids on suspected Iranian military and nuclear assets. Iran responded with retaliatory missile strikes targeting Israeli military bases and infrastructure. The regional fallout has prompted urgent mediation efforts by several global powers, including Oman, France, and the European Union.

According to diplomatic insiders, Iran has categorically refused to return to any nuclear negotiations until Israel halts its ongoing attacks. However, Iran is open to compromise—Tehran may consider revising parts of its nuclear enrichment strategy if Washington can pressure Israel into ceasing its aggression.

Phone Conversations Hint at Diplomatic Openings

As per sources familiar with the matter, one of the focal points of the recent Iran-US phone exchanges was a U.S. proposal tabled in late May. The proposal involves forming a regional consortium to handle uranium enrichment outside Iranian territory, thus limiting Tehran’s ability to enrich uranium independently.

Iran, however, has rejected this proposal for now. But Foreign Minister Araghchi reportedly conveyed that if the U.S. can rein in Israeli military actions, Iran may show “some softness” in its nuclear approach. This statement marks the first potential opening in Iran’s hardline position in months.

Nuclear Program: The Sticking Point

At the center of this geopolitical standoff remains the long-standing issue of Iran’s right to enrich uranium on its own soil. While Tehran maintains that its nuclear ambitions are purely peaceful, Western analysts remain skeptical due to Iran’s continued stockpiling of 60% enriched uranium, which is just below weapons-grade level (90%).

Iran insists its enrichment activities are in line with national sovereignty and do not indicate any intent to develop nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has recently declared Iran as non-compliant with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), escalating international scrutiny.

Trump’s Strategic Ambiguity

U.S. President Donald Trump has so far remained non-committal about launching joint military operations with Israel against Iran. While he has not ruled out the possibility, Trump recently hinted that Iranian diplomats are willing to engage in direct talks with Washington.

At the recent G7 Summit, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that Trump had privately told other leaders he was open to broad-based negotiations after a ceasefire. However, Trump later publicly denied Macron’s assertion, maintaining a position of strategic ambiguity.

This has led analysts to believe that Trump is using a dual strategy—keeping the pressure high on Iran while leaving diplomatic doors slightly ajar.

Europe Steps Up Its Diplomatic Role

With tensions threatening to spill over across the region, Europe’s E3 powers—France, Germany, and the UK—have ramped up their diplomatic efforts. On Sunday, foreign ministers of the three countries held a joint call with Iran’s Abbas Araghchi, urging restraint and dialogue.

A follow-up meeting has reportedly been scheduled for Friday in Geneva, confirmed by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei and a senior European official. This reflects the EU’s continued commitment to preventing a military conflict and reviving the nuclear agreement.

A senior European diplomat stated, “The key message from the G7 was clear—Trump wants this military operation to end soon and prefers to negotiate directly with Iran. But he also made it clear that Iran must accept U.S. terms if talks are to happen.”

Can Diplomacy Succeed Amid Escalation?

Despite these backchannel discussions and multilateral efforts, several major hurdles remain:

  • Iran’s demand for an immediate end to Israeli airstrikes as a precondition for any talks.

  • U.S. insistence on full dismantling of Iran’s domestic enrichment capabilities.

  • The unresolved status of Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium.

  • Increasing pressure from hardliners on both sides to avoid concessions.

Yet the initiation of direct talks—even if limited and unofficial—marks a critical development in the region’s highly volatile landscape.

Geopolitical Stakes Are High

This diplomatic push comes amid a broader realignment in Middle East politics, where regional players like Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Turkey are closely monitoring the Iran-Israel conflict. Any breakthrough—or breakdown—in Iran-U.S. relations will have far-reaching consequences for the security architecture of the region.

Additionally, the involvement of Oman as a neutral mediator highlights the importance of third-party diplomacy in creating communication channels between long-time adversaries.

While it is too early to predict a resolution, the latest developments suggest that diplomacy is not off the table. Iran’s conditional willingness to adjust its nuclear posture, combined with America’s cautious openness to dialogue, creates a narrow but meaningful window for de-escalation.

As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, the global community watches closely, hoping that these early signs of engagement can help prevent another war and restore the path of negotiation.
