Delhi Weather Update: Dust Storms and Light Rain Expected, Winds May Exceed 50 km/h

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi is likely to witness dust-laden winds blowing at speeds exceeding 50 km/h along with light drizzles and thunderstorm activity on Saturday, 24 May. This change in weather is expected to bring continued respite from the summer heat for residents.

 Temperature Observations and Forecast

On Friday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 37.1°C at the Safdarjung observatory, which is 3.1°C below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 26.4°C, also marginally lower than average.

For Saturday, IMD has forecast:

  • Max Temperature: 36°C to 38°C

  • Min Temperature: 25°C to 27°C

  • Humidity: Between 49% and 78%

  • Conditions: Partly cloudy skies, light rain, and thunder with lightning

Why Is May Different This Year in Delhi?

Typically, May is Delhi’s hottest month, often marked by severe heatwaves. However, 2025 has been an exception. The presence of:

  • Western Disturbances

  • Cyclonic Circulations

  • Low-pressure systems

has caused intermittent showers and overcast conditions, keeping the temperature relatively mild and preventing heatwave conditions from developing.

No Heatwave Alert for the Rest of May

Last year, Delhi recorded six heatwave days in May. This year, not a single heatwave has occurred so far. IMD’s forecast till 29 May indicates that no heatwave is expected during the remaining days of the month.

 Air Quality Index (AQI) Report

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB):

  • Delhi’s average AQI on Friday stood at 129, which falls in the moderate category.

  • At 8 AM, the AQI dropped to 92 (satisfactory category)—a significant milestone as it was the first time in two months the city recorded such clean air.

  • Light rain and wind are expected to help maintain this level for the next two days.

GRAP Stage-1 Measures Withdrawn

Due to improving air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) held a meeting on Friday evening and decided to revoke Stage-1 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These had been reimposed earlier due to a brief spike in pollution.
