Delhi Metro to Run at Record-Breaking 93 Feet Height, Construction Carried Out at Night to Avoid Passenger Disruptions

Delhi Metro

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a major milestone for urban transport, the Delhi Metro will soon run at an unprecedented height of 93 feet (28.362 meters) above the ground. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully completed track laying at this height as part of the Phase-4 expansion.

This elevated track is constructed near Haiderpur Badli Mor Metro Station, forming a part of the Magenta Line extension from R.K. Ashram to Janakpuri West. The newly built 490-meter-long metro section will pass over the Yellow Line (Samaypur Badli – Millennium City Centre Gurugram), making Pier Number 340 the highest-ever metro structure in Delhi.

This breaks DMRC’s previous record of 23.6 meters, set at Dhaula Kuan during the Phase-3 construction of the Pink Line.

Why Was Metro Construction Done at Night?

Given the complexity and safety concerns, DMRC chose nighttime for construction to avoid disruptions to daily metro services and ensure smooth operations.

Key Challenges in Construction:

✔ Building at 93 feet height required advanced engineering solutions.
✔ Structural reinforcement was done using steel spans, pier casting, and pre-fabricated components.
✔ Installing a steel span over an active metro line (Yellow Line) was the biggest challenge.
✔ Traditional ground support was replaced with Macalloy bars due to space constraints.

Second Highest Metro Track Also on Magenta Line

Apart from the record 93-feet-high metro track, DMRC has also constructed another elevated metro section on the same Magenta Line, making it the second-highest metro track in Delhi.

📌 Near Haiderpur Badli Mor Metro Station, DMRC installed a 52.288-meter-long steel span at a height of 27.610 meters.

📌 This span was constructed above a railway crossing, requiring extreme precision due to limited clearance.

📌 Two heavy-duty cranes were used to lift and place 142-metric-ton steel girders at exact positions.
