The registration process for the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) 71st Combined Competitive Examination officially ended on Monday. According to official data, a staggering 4.39 lakh candidates have submitted their applications for this year’s exam, which will be conducted to fill 1,298 government posts across various departments of the Bihar state government.

With an average of 338 candidates vying for a single post, the competition for BPSC 71st exam is expected to be fiercer than ever.

Record-Breaking Applications: BPSC 71st Exam Sees Massive Participation

The BPSC exam has always been a prominent opportunity for aspirants seeking stable and prestigious government jobs in Bihar. However, the 71st edition of the exam has created a buzz due to the sheer number of applicants. According to officials, more than 439,000 candidates have applied, making it one of the most competitive editions in recent years.

 Key Numbers:

  • Total applications received: 4.39 lakh

  • Total vacancies: 1,298

  • Average competition per post: 1:338

The high participation reflects both the popularity of civil services in Bihar and the increasing unemployment pressure on youth seeking secure careers in the public sector.

What Makes the BPSC 71st Exam So Important?

The BPSC Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) is conducted to recruit officers for high-ranking administrative positions in the Bihar state government. These include posts such as Deputy Collector, DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police), Revenue Officer, Block Supply Officer, and more.

This year, the number of vacancies was revised and increased to 1,298, providing broader opportunities for aspirants. The BPSC exam is often compared to the UPSC Civil Services Exam in terms of prestige, especially at the state level.

Given the large number of applicants and limited seats, clearing the BPSC 71st Prelims will be a significant challenge.

Breakdown of Key Posts Under BPSC 71st Recruitment

While the Bihar Public Service Commission has not yet released the detailed advertisement for post-wise allocation, traditionally, the following posts are included in the Combined Competitive Exam:

  • Bihar Administrative Service (BAS) – Deputy Collector

  • Bihar Police Service (BPS) – Deputy SP

  • Revenue Officers

  • Supply Inspectors

  • Rural Development Officers

  • Block Panchayati Raj Officers

  • Block Welfare Officers

  • Labor Enforcement Officers

Each of these roles comes with administrative authority, job security, and opportunities for career advancement, making them highly desirable among the aspirants.

Exam Pattern and Selection Process

The BPSC 71st CCE 2025 will follow a three-stage selection process:

 Preliminary Exam (Objective Type)

  • General Studies paper (150 marks)

  • Duration: 2 hours

 Mains Exam (Descriptive Type)

  • General Hindi (100 marks) – qualifying

  • General Studies Paper 1 (300 marks)

  • General Studies Paper 2 (300 marks)

  • Optional Subject (300 marks)

 Interview

  • 120 marks

  • Final selection will be based on Mains and Interview scores

Candidates must clear each stage to move to the next. The Prelims is a screening exam, while the Mains and Interview determine the final merit list.

What’s Next After Application Submission?

Now that the application window has closed, BPSC will soon release the Prelims exam date, followed by the admit card download schedule. Candidates are advised to keep checking the official website bpsc.bih.nic.in for the latest updates.

Based on previous trends, the BPSC 71st Prelims exam is likely to be held in the last quarter of 2025, possibly between September and November.

Intense Competition Ahead: Expert Opinion

Experts believe that the growing number of aspirants reflects both a positive interest in civil services and the pressure of limited job opportunities in Bihar.

According to a Patna-based competitive exam coach:

“Every year, more and more students are preparing full-time for BPSC and UPSC exams. With 4.39 lakh applications this year, even cracking the Prelims has become a huge milestone. Candidates need smart preparation and in-depth understanding of Bihar-specific topics.”

Preparation Tips for BPSC 71st Aspirants

Given the high competition ratio, aspirants are advised to focus on a targeted and strategic study plan. Here are some quick tips:

  • Master Bihar GK: Questions related to Bihar’s history, geography, economy, and current affairs are crucial.

  • Focus on NCERTs: Build conceptual clarity using standard textbooks.

  • Solve Previous Year Papers: Understand the pattern and type of questions asked.

  • Practice Mock Tests: Time management is key for Prelims.

  • Stay Updated: Regularly follow newspapers and government schemes relevant to Bihar.

Why the BPSC Exam Still Attracts Lakhs Every Year

Despite rising competition, the BPSC Civil Services Exam continues to draw massive interest year after year. There are several reasons:

  • Prestige of Government Jobs: High respect and status associated with roles like Deputy Collector and DSP.

  • Job Security: In a time of private-sector instability, government jobs offer lifetime security.

  • Power & Responsibility: Direct involvement in administrative work impacting the public.

  • Career Growth: Promotions and departmental exams allow long-term growth in service.
