Bihar Weather Update: Cold Wave and Dense Fog Grip the State

Published on

Bihar continues to reel under severe winter conditions as cold weather tightens its grip across the state. Daily life has been disrupted in several districts due to low temperatures, dense fog, and chilly winds. On January 12, the Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for cold day conditions and dense fog in 19 districts, warning residents to remain cautious during the next 24 hours.

The cold spell has already affected road visibility, early morning travel, and outdoor activities. Although brief sunshine on Sunday offered temporary relief, the overall impact of winter remains strong. Weather officials have clearly stated that there is no immediate possibility of significant relief from the cold.

Temperature Fluctuations to Continue This Week

According to the Meteorological Department, Bihar will experience fluctuating temperatures in the coming days. While slight variations are expected, the cold conditions are likely to persist. The weather is expected to remain dry across the state for the next seven days. During this period, moderate to dense fog may cover many regions, especially during early morning and late evening hours.

Experts have predicted a temporary rise of one to three degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature over the next 24 hours. After this short increase, a drop of two to four degrees Celsius is expected. Minimum temperatures may also rise slightly by one to four degrees Celsius before stabilizing again.

These fluctuations will not bring noticeable warmth, and the cold sensation will continue across most districts.

Current Temperature Conditions Across Bihar

Cold conditions are expected to continue today, with temperatures remaining largely unchanged. Many districts may record minimum temperatures near eight degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures could hover around eighteen degrees Celsius. Despite these readings, the wind chill factor will make the cold feel more intense.

On Sunday, Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 8.5 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 17.6 degrees Celsius. Gaya experienced the coldest night in the state, where the mercury dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius. Aurangabad reported the highest daytime temperature, reaching 23.3 degrees Celsius.

Such variations indicate uneven winter intensity across Bihar, but overall conditions remain harsh.

Yellow Alert Issued for 19 Districts

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions in 19 districts of Bihar. These include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Purnia, Katihar, Vaishali, and Samastipur. In these areas, temperatures may drop by one to two degrees Celsius during the next 24 hours.

Dense fog is expected to reduce visibility during early morning hours, which may affect road and rail traffic. Cold day conditions could also pose health risks, especially for elderly people and children.

Impact of Chilly Winds on Daily Life

Cold northwesterly winds are intensifying the winter conditions across Bihar. These winds are making mornings and evenings particularly uncomfortable. People are avoiding outdoor activities, and markets are witnessing reduced footfall during early hours.

The cold weather has also affected daily wage workers, farmers, and commuters. Schools in some areas have adjusted schedules to protect students from extreme cold. Hospitals have reported an increase in patients suffering from cold-related ailments.

Health experts advise wearing warm clothing and avoiding prolonged exposure to cold air, especially during foggy conditions.

Districts Without Weather Alerts

While 19 districts remain under yellow alert, no weather warnings have been issued for 18 districts, including Buxar, Patna, Begusarai, Munger, Rohtas, Khagaria, Nalanda, and Jehanabad. However, authorities have clarified that cold conditions will still prevail in these regions.

Residents in these districts may also experience fog and chilly winds, even without formal alerts. Officials have urged people to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines during early morning travel.

Dry Weather Expected to Continue

Despite the cold wave, Bihar is not expected to receive rainfall during the next week. The dry weather pattern will continue, which may further intensify cold conditions at night. Fog formation is likely due to calm winds and high moisture levels during early hours.

Meteorologists believe that stable atmospheric conditions are preventing major weather changes. Any significant improvement in temperature may take several more days.

Advisory for Residents

Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with weather forecasts and alerts. People are encouraged to limit unnecessary travel during dense fog hours. Drivers should use fog lights and maintain safe speeds on highways.

Farmers have also been advised to take protective measures for crops affected by cold stress. Livestock owners should ensure adequate shelter and warmth for animals during night hours.

Winter Conditions to Persist

In conclusion, Bihar will continue to face severe winter conditions with no immediate relief in sight. Temperature fluctuations may occur, but the cold wave and fog will remain dominant weather features. The yellow alert issued for several districts highlights the seriousness of the situation.
