India has rapidly transformed from being the world’s largest smartphone market into a significant smartphone export hub. The first half of 2025 has highlighted this shift with export numbers that underline India’s rising role in the global technology supply chain.

Reports confirm that Apple’s iPhone 16 dominated exports from India, accounting for 18% of all smartphone shipments. Samsung’s Galaxy A series followed with a remarkable 25.5% share in the mid-range export category. Surprisingly, Motorola secured the third spot, surpassing well-established brands like Xiaomi and Vivo.

These numbers indicate a fundamental change in India’s role, moving beyond domestic consumption to global supply.

iPhone 16: The Flagship of Indian Exports

According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 16 emerged as the most exported smartphone from India during H1 2025. The model alone captured 18% of total shipments. Along with iPhone 15 and iPhone 16e, Apple devices dominated the top five export list.

This development highlights how Apple’s manufacturing units in India are not only serving local demand but also meeting international needs. Apple’s export shipments from India now reach key global markets including the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

The growth has been supported by the Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encouraged large-scale manufacturing. Apple’s decision to expand assembly lines in India reflects its long-term strategy of reducing reliance on China while boosting exports.

Why the iPhone 16 Became the Export Leader

The iPhone 16’s success as an export product rests on several factors. It represents Apple’s premium segment, offering cutting-edge features, advanced processors, and high-end design. Global demand for premium devices remains high, and India has become Apple’s strategic hub to meet this demand.

The iPhone 16 series, including the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16e, appeals to diverse consumer segments abroad. These variants are targeted at both affluent markets and cost-sensitive buyers who still seek the Apple experience. By exporting multiple models, Apple has created a broad spectrum of demand that keeps its export numbers high.

Samsung Galaxy A Series: Capturing the Mid-Range Market

While Apple dominated the premium export market, Samsung’s Galaxy A series captured the mid-range sector. The A series recorded a 25.5% share in India’s smartphone exports. These phones, priced in the INR 15,000 to INR 30,000 range, are popular worldwide for their balance of affordability and performance.

The Galaxy A series is known for its large displays, durable battery life, and consistent 5G support. These features make the series attractive to international buyers looking for value-for-money devices.

Samsung’s strategy to position its A series as affordable yet powerful helped it succeed in markets across Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe. With consistent quality and accessible pricing, Samsung continues to hold a strong foothold in India’s export landscape.

Motorola: The Biggest Surprise in Exports

One of the most unexpected trends in H1 2025 was Motorola’s rise. Traditionally, brands like Xiaomi and Vivo had strong export numbers from India. However, Motorola overtook them and claimed the third spot with a 2.5% export share.

Motorola’s Edge and G series smartphones are now being manufactured in India and shipped worldwide. These phones emphasize durability, quality performance, and user trust. This strategy allowed Motorola to slowly regain its position in the global market.

By focusing on reliability and brand reputation, Motorola has leveraged India’s manufacturing strength to expand its reach in competitive markets.

Apple and Samsung Dominate the Export Chart

The combined strength of Apple and Samsung leaves little room for competitors. In H1 2025, Apple captured 60% of India’s total smartphone exports, while Samsung held 34%. Together, the two giants accounted for 94% of shipments from India.

This overwhelming dominance shows how global markets rely heavily on these two companies for both premium and mid-range segments. Smaller brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have struggled to match this performance, despite maintaining strong domestic sales in India.

India’s Role in Global Supply Chains

India’s rise as an export hub is not accidental. Global technology firms are diversifying supply chains to reduce dependence on China. India, with its skilled workforce, government incentives, and growing infrastructure, has become a natural choice.

The PLI scheme, supportive trade policies, and rising local demand have all contributed to this transformation. Apple and Samsung’s growing production units in India symbolize this shift, and other brands are expected to follow suit.

Factors Driving Smartphone Export Growth

Several elements are driving India’s booming smartphone exports. First, the presence of global manufacturing facilities has created strong production ecosystems. Second, India’s strategic location makes it easier to serve Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and European markets. Third, government incentives such as tax benefits and subsidies encourage large-scale production for exports.

Additionally, increasing demand for both premium and budget devices globally ensures that India remains a versatile hub capable of supplying across segments.

Global Markets Benefiting from Indian Exports

The iPhone 16 and Samsung A series are not just meeting domestic demand but also being shipped to critical markets. In the United States and Europe, Apple’s iPhone exports from India are replacing traditional Chinese shipments. In Africa and Southeast Asia, Samsung’s A series devices are meeting the demand for affordable 5G phones.

Motorola’s exports are targeting Latin American and European buyers, where the brand maintains loyal users. These export patterns highlight how India is serving diverse regions with different consumer demands.

Challenges in Maintaining Growth

Despite the success, challenges remain. Export numbers require consistent quality standards, reliable logistics, and large-scale production capabilities. Any disruption in supply chains, labor availability, or global trade policies could impact the momentum.

India must also ensure that smaller brands get opportunities to expand exports, preventing over-dependence on Apple and Samsung. Building strong ecosystems for all manufacturers will ensure long-term sustainability.

The Road Ahead for Indian Smartphone Exports

Experts believe that India’s role as a smartphone export leader will only grow in the coming years. With brands like Apple increasing their local manufacturing and Samsung strengthening mid-range production, export numbers are set to rise further.

Motorola’s success signals opportunities for other brands if they can adapt strategies around trust, affordability, and innovation. Meanwhile, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo may re-strategize their export approach to regain lost ground.
