Monsoon Update for Delhi-NCR: Rain, Thunderstorms Expected All Week as Weather

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a refreshing change in weather today. After days of sweltering heat, the sky turned cloudy, and light rain brought a noticeable drop in temperature. The shift in weather not only provided relief from the heatwave but also signaled the much-anticipated arrival of the monsoon in Delhi.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Southwest Monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by June 23, with an extended spell of rain and thunderstorms forecasted throughout the coming week. A yellow alert has already been issued for several days, advising residents to stay cautious as weather conditions are expected to remain unstable.

Monsoon to Hit Delhi by June 23, Says IMD

The IMD has officially announced that Delhi’s monsoon season is expected to begin within the next 48 hours. The weather office has released a seven-day forecast that includes moderate to heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorm activity starting from June 21 through June 27.

 Monsoon Forecast Highlights:

  • Monsoon Arrival in Delhi: Expected by June 23

  • Rainy Spell Duration: June 21 to June 27

  • Thunderstorm Alerts: Active throughout the week

  • Yellow Alert Issued: For June 21, 22, and 23

The ongoing pre-monsoon showers are part of the transitional phase, which typically sees thunderstorms, wind gusts, and localized rainfall, setting the stage for the full onset of monsoon rains.

Delhi-NCR Weather Alert: June 21–23

 June 21 (Saturday):

  • Weather: Partly cloudy skies with chances of light rainfall and thunderstorm activity in the evening and night.

  • Wind Speed: 30–40 km/h gusts expected during storms.

  • Temperature:

    • Maximum: 36°C

    • Minimum: 28°C

  • Alert: Yellow alert issued by IMD for rain and storm safety.

 June 22–23 (Sunday & Monday):

The weather department has predicted an increase in rainfall intensity along with frequent thunderstorm activity during the evening and nighttime hours.

  • Skies: Overcast conditions expected.

  • Rainfall: Moderate to heavy rain in parts of the NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

  • Wind Speed: Sustained winds at 30–40 km/h.

  • Temperature Range:

    • Maximum: 34–35°C

    • Minimum: 28°C

  • Advisory: Continued yellow alert; residents advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during storms.

 Extended Weather Forecast: June 24–27

The IMD’s extended forecast from June 24 to June 27 suggests a continuation of cloudy skies, light to moderate rainfall, and possible thunderstorms, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings.

 June 24–27 Highlights:

  • Cloud Cover: Persistent throughout the period

  • Rain Possibility: Daily light to moderate showers, particularly in the mornings

  • Wind Conditions: Mild gusts expected during storms

  • Temperature Forecast:

    • Maximum: 34–35°C

    • Minimum: 26–27°C

This consistent spell of rain is likely to help bring down pollution levels and further moderate the heat, offering welcome relief for both residents and farmers in the region.

Why This Monsoon Matters: Key Impacts on Delhi-NCR

The 2025 pre-monsoon heatwave broke several records in North India. With temperatures soaring above 45°C in some pockets of NCR earlier this month, the arrival of monsoon rains is critical for public health, water reservoirs, and agricultural activity.

 Benefits of Rainfall in Delhi-NCR:

  • Temperature Relief: Substantial cooling effect, especially during nighttime

  • Improved Air Quality: Rain helps settle dust and reduce PM2.5 levels

  • Soil Moisture Replenishment: Crucial for upcoming crop cycles in rural areas

  • Urban Water Table Recharge: Essential for Delhi’s groundwater-dependent localities

 IMD’s Advisory for Residents

The IMD has advised residents in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and surrounding areas to remain vigilant during the yellow alert days.

Safety Recommendations:

  • Avoid parking under trees or loose hoardings during storms

  • Secure balconies, windows, and rooftops

  • Plan travel ahead to avoid traffic congestion during rain hours

  • Stay updated through weather apps and local alerts
