Vaishno Devi Landslide Tragedy: 31 Dead, Several Injured as Heavy Rains Trigger Disaster

Published on

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing relentless rainfall for several days, leading to widespread destruction and tragic incidents. On Wednesday, a massive landslide struck the pilgrimage route to Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra, claiming at least 31 lives and injuring 23 others. The landslide occurred on the Trikuta hills, which house the revered shrine, causing significant damage to the route and leaving several pilgrims stranded. Authorities fear that more people may still be trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.

Another Landslide Claimed Nine Lives a Day Earlier

This tragic incident came just a day after a similar landslide occurred on the same route. On Tuesday, nine people lost their lives and 21 others were injured in that disaster. Continuous rainfall has weakened the mountains, causing frequent collapses and severe damage to the pilgrimage path. Officials have expressed concern that the death toll from the Wednesday landslide may rise further as the search progresses.

Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc Across Jammu and Kashmir

The region has been devastated by unrelenting rainfall, which has led to multiple landslides, floods, and damage to key infrastructure. In Jammu, heavy showers destroyed bridges, uprooted electricity poles, and toppled mobile towers, disrupting both transportation and communication. On Tuesday alone, the city recorded 22 centimeters of rainfall between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm, marking one of the highest six-hour rainfalls in recent history. Although rainfall reduced after midnight, providing brief relief, the overall impact has been severe.

Thousands Evacuated to Safer Areas

The continuous downpour and sudden floods have forced authorities to evacuate more than 3,500 residents from vulnerable areas. Teams from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, and local volunteers are working round the clock to rescue those trapped and provide relief. Evacuated residents are being shifted to temporary shelters, where they are receiving food, clean drinking water, and medical aid.

Despite these efforts, communication services remain badly affected in large parts of the Union Territory, worsening the crisis. Limited mobile connectivity and power cuts have hindered rescue coordination, making it difficult for families to stay in touch with their loved ones.

Train Services Severely Disrupted

Heavy rainfall and landslides have also disrupted train services across Jammu and Kashmir. Northern Railways announced the cancellation of 22 trains on Wednesday, while 27 trains were stopped mid-route due to unsafe conditions. Services from Katra, Jammu, and Udhampur have been hit the hardest, including nine trains originating from the Vaishno Devi base camp.

In addition, railway services between Pathankot and Kangrauli in Himachal Pradesh were suspended after flash floods damaged a crucial bridge over the Chakki River. However, trains running on the Katra-Srinagar route continue to operate, offering some relief to stranded travelers.

Pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi Severely Affected

The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, one of the most visited shrines in India, has been heavily disrupted by the back-to-back landslides. The pilgrimage route on the Trikuta hills has been severely damaged, and with repeated incidents, safety concerns are mounting. Authorities have temporarily halted the movement of pilgrims to ensure no further casualties occur.

This disruption has not only affected devotees but has also impacted local businesses that depend heavily on pilgrimage-related tourism. Hotels, shops, and transport services in Katra have been left reeling from the sudden halt in activities.

Rescue Operations Continue Despite Challenges

Rescue teams are battling tough conditions as they search for survivors under the debris of landslides. The unstable terrain, continuous rainfall, and blocked roads have slowed down the process. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the rubble, but officials warn that more landslides could occur if the rains persist.

The Indian Army has set up medical camps near the affected areas to treat the injured. Helicopters have also been placed on standby to airlift victims if required. Volunteers are working alongside authorities, helping to distribute food and essentials to those affected.

Rainfall Statistics and Forecast

Meteorological officials confirmed that Jammu recorded its highest six-hour rainfall in years on Tuesday. With 22 centimeters of rain in just six hours, the region’s soil and hillsides have become saturated, making landslides more frequent. Although rainfall eased after midnight, forecasts suggest that intermittent showers may continue for the next few days.

Authorities have issued warnings for residents and pilgrims to avoid risky areas and refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary. Precautionary measures are being taken to minimize further casualties, but the unpredictable weather continues to pose a serious challenge.

Impact on Infrastructure and Daily Life

The heavy rains and subsequent landslides have damaged critical infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir. Roads have been washed away, bridges have collapsed, and power lines have been cut off, plunging several areas into darkness. Communication networks remain patchy, making coordination difficult for rescue teams.

Public transport and private vehicles have also been disrupted, leaving many stranded. Markets and schools in the affected regions remain closed, and the local economy has suffered heavy losses. The damage caused to key facilities has raised concerns about long-term rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has mobilized all possible resources to handle the disaster. Emergency control rooms have been set up to coordinate relief activities. Central agencies are also closely monitoring the situation and extending support to the state machinery.

Relief materials including tents, blankets, and medicines are being dispatched to the affected areas. Authorities are prioritizing the restoration of electricity and communication networks to ensure smooth coordination in rescue efforts.

The Union government has assured full assistance and directed agencies to provide every possible help to the victims and their families.

The Vaishno Devi landslide tragedy has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Jammu and Kashmir to natural disasters triggered by heavy rains. With 31 deaths on Wednesday and nine more casualties the previous day, the back-to-back incidents have left families shattered and communities devastated. The disruption of the pilgrimage route, evacuation of thousands, and widespread damage to infrastructure underscore the seriousness of the crisis.

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, restoring essential services, and preventing further damage. The resilience of the people, combined with coordinated efforts from authorities and volunteers, will be key in overcoming this tragedy. The Vaishno Devi landslide is a grim reminder of the urgent need for better disaster preparedness and sustainable infrastructure in vulnerable regions.
