Relief from Scorching Heat in Delhi-NCR

KKN Gurugram Desk | In welcome news for residents of Delhi-NCR, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a significant change in weather starting tomorrow. After days of intense heat, Delhi and its neighboring NCR regions are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the next six days, bringing much-needed relief from the oppressive summer conditions.

According to the latest Delhi weather forecast issued by IMD, a western disturbance and moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are likely to influence the region’s weather, leading to intermittent rain showers, overcast skies, and a noticeable drop in maximum temperatures.

Delhi Weather Update: Rain, Thunderstorms, and Winds Expected

The IMD bulletin released on Friday afternoon indicates that from June 14, Delhi-NCR will witness scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, with wind speeds ranging between 30 to 50 km/h. These weather conditions are expected to continue till at least June 19, providing consistent breaks from the ongoing heatwave that has gripped the region since late May.

The areas likely to benefit from these weather changes include:

  • Central Delhi

  • South and North Delhi

  • Gurugram

  • Noida

  • Ghaziabad

  • Faridabad

Residents are advised to stay updated with daily weather alerts, especially if they have travel or outdoor plans, as sudden gusts of wind and localized showers could affect mobility and visibility during peak hours.

Why the Sudden Change in Weather?

Meteorologists attribute this shift in Delhi-NCR’s weather to a combination of:

  • An active Western Disturbance moving across northern India.

  • Moisture incursion from the southwest monsoon winds.

  • Rising humidity levels due to increasing sea breeze interactions.

Although the monsoon onset in Delhi is still officially a few weeks away, these pre-monsoon showers are a typical feature in mid to late June and often serve as a precursor to the full arrival of the monsoon season in north India.

Impact on Daily Life: Schools, Traffic, and Air Quality

The anticipated change in weather is likely to have mixed effects on life in the capital and its surrounding regions:

 Positive Impacts:

  • Reduced heat stress and cooler evenings.

  • Improvement in air quality index (AQI) due to dust settling from rain.

  • Decrease in electricity demand as use of air conditioning drops.

 Possible Disruptions:

  • Localized waterlogging in low-lying areas.

  • Traffic slowdowns during evening showers.

  • Potential delays in short-haul flights and Metro services during peak storms.

Delhi Traffic Police has advised commuters to plan ahead and avoid waterlogged routes. Parents of school-going children are also urged to stay tuned for potential advisories on early dismissals or changes in school timings.

Monsoon 2025 Outlook for Delhi-NCR

While the current weather activity is attributed to pre-monsoon conditions, the monsoon is expected to hit Delhi around June 27, as per long-range forecasts by IMD. This aligns with the typical monsoon timeline for north India.

The 2025 monsoon season is projected to be normal to slightly above normal, thanks to weakening El Niño patterns and neutralizing oceanic conditions. If these predictions hold true, Delhi-NCR could see a strong monsoon performance, especially in July and August, which is critical for water reservoirs, agriculture, and overall climatic balance in the region.

What Should Residents Do Now?

As the weather changes, residents are advised to:

  • Carry umbrellas or raincoats, especially during evening commutes.

  • Ensure drains and rooftops are clear to avoid water stagnation.

  • Stay updated with real-time weather alerts via the IMD app or website.

  • Elderly individuals and those with respiratory issues should take precautions during humidity spikes.

If you are planning travel within Delhi-NCR or have outdoor events scheduled over the next week, it’s best to recheck the weather forecast daily for any sudden updates.

Delhi Rainfall: A Break from the Heatwave

Over the past two weeks, Delhi recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 43°C, with heatwave warnings issued across several days. The humidity levels also climbed, making outdoor activities uncomfortable and even hazardous in the afternoons.

This upcoming rain spell, though not yet monsoonal, is a crucial break from the prolonged dry spell. It is expected to lower temperatures by 4–6 degrees Celsius, according to weather experts.

While Delhi-NCR residents can finally look forward to cooler, wetter days, it’s important to remember that pre-monsoon showers can be unpredictable. Stay prepared, plan your day wisely, and keep an eye on verified weather updates.
