PM Modi Honored with Cyprus’ Highest Civilian Award: A Milestone in India-Cyprus Bilateral Relations

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a moment of diplomatic significance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Cyprus’ highest civilian honor, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, during his visit to the Mediterranean nation. The prestigious recognition was conferred by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides as part of PM Modi’s first leg of his three-nation foreign tour.

This historic event not only reflects the strengthening of India-Cyprus bilateral relations but also underlines India’s growing influence on the global stage.

What is the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III?

The Order of Makarios III is Cyprus’s highest honor, named after Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus. The Grand Cross is the most prestigious grade of this order and is reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Cyprus or to international diplomacy, peace, and cooperation.

By bestowing this award on PM Modi, Cyprus acknowledged India’s pivotal role in global diplomacy, economic collaboration, and its stand against terrorism.

?? Grand Reception in Cyprus

PM Modi received a red-carpet welcome at the Larnaca International Airport. President Christodoulides personally welcomed him—an honor reserved for only the most distinguished guests. This marked a special moment in Indo-Cypriot relations, as PM Modi became only the third Indian Prime Minister to visit Cyprus, following Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

PM Modi’s Acknowledgment: “This Is for 1.4 Billion Indians”

While accepting the honor, PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the President and the people of Cyprus:

“This award is not just for Narendra Modi, but for 1.4 billion Indians. It is a recognition of the capabilities, aspirations, and inclusive values of our people.”

PM Modi emphasized that the honor reflects India’s ancient values rooted in peace, harmony, and global unity—the core of its ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) philosophy.

 Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The award ceremony was followed by a joint press conference where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening India-Cyprus ties. President Christodoulides strongly supported India’s fight against terrorism, offering Cyprus’s “full backing.”

In his address, PM Modi highlighted the mutual respect and shared democratic values between the two countries:

“This award represents our enduring friendship, our shared belief in democracy, peace, and development. It stands for our joint commitment to sovereignty, regional integrity, and prosperity.”

A Vision for Global Peace and Collaboration

PM Modi used the platform to outline a broader vision:

  • Boosting bilateral trade and investment

  • Enhancing cooperation in renewable energy, education, IT, and cybersecurity

  • Working together to build a peaceful and secure global order

“We will not only work for mutual development but also contribute to building a peaceful, stable, and secure global atmosphere,” Modi stated.

This statement resonates with India’s positioning as a rising global power that emphasizes collaboration over conflict.

 Invitation to Visit India

As part of diplomatic courtesy, PM Modi extended a formal invitation to President Christodoulides to visit India. This gesture marks the beginning of a new phase in India-Cyprus diplomacy.

Ministry of External Affairs: A Symbol of Shared Vision

The Ministry of External Affairs of India acknowledged the honor through its official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who tweeted:

“This award symbolizes India and Cyprus’s commitment to a shared vision of peace, progress, and a cooperative international order.”

Such accolades not only celebrate diplomatic milestones but also signal strong geopolitical partnerships that India is nurturing across continents.

Historical Background: India-Cyprus Relations

India and Cyprus share a long-standing relationship based on:

  • Non-Aligned Movement participation

  • Mutual support at international forums like the UN and Commonwealth

  • Collaborations in education, science, technology, and pharmaceuticals

Cyprus has consistently supported India’s bid for permanent membership at the UN Security Council, while India supports Cyprus’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

 Why This Recognition Matters

This award is more than ceremonial. It underscores:

  1. India’s rising global stature as a key player in geopolitics

  2. Cyprus’s trust in India’s peacekeeping and anti-terrorism stand

  3. A milestone in India-EU relations, especially given Cyprus’s strategic location in the Mediterranean

  4. Reinforced faith in India’s leadership during a time of geopolitical volatility

 Global Reactions & Media Coverage

The international community, especially across Europe, viewed this development as:

  • A recognition of India’s democratic leadership

  • A nod to PM Modi’s diplomacy on the global stage

  • A reminder of India’s soft power, driven by ancient wisdom, modern innovation, and global partnerships

PM Modi’s honor by Cyprus is not merely a diplomatic ceremony; it marks a new chapter in Indo-European relations, solidifying India’s image as a trustworthy, peace-driven, and development-oriented nation. The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is not just a medal—it’s a message.

As India continues to forge global alliances, honors like these reinforce its commitment to unity in diversity, global peace, and shared prosperity.
